What happens after you submit an Atlantic Immigration Program permanent residence application?
Save the automatic email you receive after submitting your application through the portal. IRCC sends a separate acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) with a file number after it confirms that the application is complete. Use the official status channel once IRCC starts processing the file. When an instruction letter arrives, check which applicant it applies to, what action it requires and when it is due.
Keep the submission email and the AOR separate
The automatic email records that the portal received the application. IRCC checks forms, signatures, fees and required documents before issuing the AOR. It then assesses eligibility and admissibility. Keep the submission date, the automatic email and the file number in one place. If a representative is helping, agree on who checks correspondence and how instructions will reach each family member.
Use the letter to schedule appointments and respond to requests
IRCC’s AIP instructions require applicants aged 14 to 79 to give fingerprints and a photo even if previously submitted biometrics are still valid. Its instructions give 30 days from the date of the letter to attend in person at a collection site. Check the name and passport details for each appointment. If IRCC sends medical exam instructions, follow the letter for each person it names and keep the appointment and completion records.
For a document request, list each item and check its deadline and the requested response channel. For example, if IRCC asks for a renewed passport and more evidence of an employment period, label and check the files separately. Keep copies of the submitted files and any upload confirmation.
Update contact and family information when it changes
Follow IRCC’s update instructions if you move, change your email address, get married or divorced, have a child, or lose a family member. Gather the effective date, the details of those affected and any supporting records. Refer to the file number as directed. If you are waiting in Canada, also check when your temporary resident status expires and which conditions apply to your work permit.
