Skilled Worker in Manitoba: Do co-op, part-time or contractor periods count?
Skilled Worker in Manitoba (SWM) generally requires a valid work permit and at least six months of continuous full-time employment with the Manitoba company that then offers you a long-term, full-time job. Graduates of a post-secondary program in another Canadian province or territory need at least one year of continuous full-time employment with that company.
Separate full-time study from qualifying employment
Work during full-time study, including experience gained on a co-op permit, does not count toward the qualifying period. If you stayed with the same company after your placement, record the end of the placement and full-time studies separately from the start of qualifying full-time employment. Confirm overlapping dates with the school and employer.
Check your role against the contract and payroll records
Self-employment and unauthorized work do not count. Independent contractors providing services to the business supporting the application are also ineligible under SWM. If you moved from a contractor agreement to employment, keep the two periods separate. Where you changed companies or moved to part-time hours, review the same-employer and continuous full-time requirements before counting the time.
Match the job offer to the period you claim
Ask the employer to confirm its legal name, your start date, location, duties and long-term offer. Review your work permit, job qualifications, language ability and settlement plan before filing.
