Can Both Parents Apply for a Canada Super Visa Together? Separate Applications Explained

Parents can plan a Canadian family visit together and submit their applications around the same time. They cannot, however, be included as two applicants in one Super Visa application. IRCC says dependants cannot be included in a Super Visa application, so each parent needs an individual application and must qualify on their own facts.

Applying at the same time is not one shared application

The family can coordinate travel dates and reuse relevant host information, such as proof of the relationship and the host’s status in Canada. Each parent still needs their own applicant information and supporting documents. One parent’s forms, medical exam or insurance policy do not cover the other parent, and approval for one person does not automatically approve the other.

Before preparing the forms, identify each applicant and the travel document each will use. Keep each person’s insurance, medical-exam record and personal history separate, while checking that the shared itinerary and invitation details are consistent. Follow the current online application instructions for each applicant; account or submission steps can change.

Each parent must meet the applicant requirements

Each applicant must apply from outside Canada, be allowed to enter Canada, show qualifying private health insurance valid for at least one year from the date of entry, and complete an immigration medical exam. The general visitor requirements also apply. IRCC may consider the purpose of the visit, the applicant’s family and financial circumstances, ties to their country of residence, and whether they will leave Canada at the end of the visit.

The parents’ situations may differ. One may have a more complex medical history, different travel or visa history, or different ties to their country of residence. Even when both parents have the same host and travel plan, review the evidence for each person separately so that the application addresses that individual’s circumstances.

Count both parents when checking the host’s income

The host’s minimum income requirement depends on family size. IRCC’s calculation includes the host, their spouse or partner and dependent children, as well as the other Super Visa applicants the host plans to support. If the host will support both parents, include both in the family-size calculation and check the current IRCC table for the corresponding threshold.

The invitation letter should make clear who is being invited and list the people included in the host’s family-size calculation. A host’s spouse or common-law partner may co-sign and contribute income when they meet IRCC’s conditions. A different relative or friend cannot replace an eligible co-signer simply by offering financial help. Keep the invitation and supporting figures consistent with the actual household and both applications.

Prepare insurance, medical exams and personal evidence separately

Each parent needs their own proof of medical insurance that meets IRCC’s current insurer, coverage and validity requirements. Each applicant must also complete their own medical exam process. Organize each person’s identity and travel documents, proof of relationship, travel history and personal financial evidence according to their circumstances.

Some background documents can support both applications, but each file should identify which applicant it belongs to. Documents that are not in English or French need translations according to IRCC’s instructions. Before submission, compare names, dates of birth, passport details and insurance certificates across the two files to catch mix-ups.

A practical order for checking the applications

First confirm that each parent is eligible to apply as a parent or grandparent and meets the general visitor requirements. Next confirm the host’s status and residence in Canada, invitation letter and income calculation with both parents counted. Then check each applicant’s insurance, medical exam and personal documents. Thresholds and instructions can change, so use the IRCC pages below on the day you submit. A complete file does not guarantee approval.

Information checked on 21 October 2026. The official IRCC pages below describe the current eligibility, document and host-income requirements.
