Canadian Student Freelancing: Recording the 24-Hour Limit Across Jobs and Clients

Freelancing does not remove Canada's international student work restrictions. If you qualify to work off campus, the regular-term limit is currently 24 hours a week across the relevant work, rather than a separate allowance for each employer or customer. Establish your work eligibility first, then decide how much paid activity you can lawfully undertake.

Confirm that you can work at all

IRCC's off-campus instructions include conditions concerning the institution, full-time study, program, study permit and commencement of studies. A social insurance number is also required. Having a number, a bank account or permission to create a platform profile does not independently establish immigration authorization to work.

Some students cannot rely on the general off-campus permission, including particular language or prerequisite-study situations. Check the actual course and conditions before taking an order. A small fee does not turn unauthorized work into permitted work. Where a permit needs an amendment, address the appropriate official process instead of assuming a client can waive the restriction.

Combine employment and independent work

A restaurant shift and a design commission should not be tracked as unrelated allowances. Maintain a weekly overview of the actual work across activities subject to the limit. Before accepting another project, check the hours already worked and the realistic time needed to deliver it. An employer may not know about your other commitments.

The official limit is weekly. Do not assume that unused hours in one week allow excess hours in a later week. IRCC states that eligible students whose permits still display the older 20-hour wording may use the current 24-hour limit while continuing to meet the other conditions. The change does not remove those conditions.

Record when the service was performed

IRCC specifically makes self-employed students responsible for recording hours and demonstrating compliance. Its guidance addresses time spent earning wages, receiving payment for services or products, and collecting commissions. A fixed project price is therefore not a reason to leave the working time unrecorded.

Keep a factual log showing dates, an order or client reference, the activity and time spent. Link it to genuine agreements, invoices and payments. These are practical evidence methods, rather than an official requirement to buy a particular application. Record actual work dates: receiving payment during a holiday does not move earlier work into that holiday.

Overseas employment is not every overseas client

IRCC says remote work for an employer outside Canada does not count toward this off-campus weekly limit, provided the student continues to meet study permit conditions. That explanation concerns an overseas employer. It should not be expanded automatically to every self-employed service where a customer or payment account is abroad.

If the arrangement combines employment, contracting and Canadian customers, separate those relationships before asking for advice. Payment currency and the location of the receiving bank are not enough to classify the activity. Tax, employment and business obligations may also need review independently of the student work-hour question.

Check breaks, leave and completion separately

Eligible students can have different working arrangements during a break formally scheduled by their institution. A personal authorized leave is different: IRCC generally does not allow student off-campus work during authorized leave or a non-studying school-transfer gap. A month with no classes should not be labelled a scheduled holiday without checking the actual program calendar.

Graduation creates another transition. The authority used while studying may end, and work while a PGWP application is pending has separate conditions. Review the completion notification and application history before continuing regular freelance commitments. Keep accurate records if a problem has already occurred and obtain an assessment of the facts, rather than deleting transactions or describing work performed by you as someone else's activity.
