Taking Leave From Canadian Studies: The 150-Day Rule, Work and PGWP Evidence
A Canadian international student does not automatically receive a 150-day holiday entitlement. IRCC allows certain authorized study interruptions, but the institution's approval, the reason and the actual duration matter. Ordinary authorized leave also does not permit continued student work on or off campus. Plan the academic, immigration and employment arrangements before stopping classes.
Obtain genuine institutional authorization
Ask the designated learning institution about its formal leave procedure and the academic consequences. Keep written approval identifying the student, program and authorized dates. A conversation with an instructor or an unanswered request should not be described as final institutional approval. The relevant school office should confirm what has actually been authorized.
Supporting medical or family records can explain why leave was needed, but serve a different purpose from school authorization. Keep the original documents and follow the applicable translation instructions if evidence is requested. Avoid obtaining an inaccurate retrospective letter that hides when studies stopped or when approval was sought.
Understand what the limited arrangement covers
IRCC's study permit conditions address authorized leave of up to 150 days in specified circumstances. The limit is not permission to cease active study whenever convenient. Review the current conditions and the student's facts, including any deferred start, transfer, health issue or other interruption. A scheduled academic break and an individual leave should be identified separately.
Where the planned interruption exceeds the applicable arrangement, obtain advice about the genuine immigration options rather than assuming that the school's willingness to hold a place preserves student status indefinitely. Academic enrolment, lawful temporary residence and permission to work are different questions. Keep the permit expiry visible while considering each.
Arrange to stop work where required
IRCC generally does not permit work on or off campus during authorized leave. Tell employers about the actual change before accepting more shifts. Freelance commitments also need attention: the absence of a conventional employer does not make paid activity outside the work rules. Check the basis for any claimed separate authorization rather than relying on the student document alone.
Do not confuse a personal leave with a school-scheduled summer or winter break. The course's own calendar matters, and some programs do not have the break assumed from another department's timetable. If the institution temporarily closes because of a strike, review the specific official instructions for that situation instead of generalizing it to every closure or absence.
Preserve evidence for a later PGWP application
IRCC's PGWP eligibility guidance requires evidence that the institution authorized a qualifying leave. Retain the approval, relevant dates and records showing when study actually resumed. A final diploma does not by itself explain an interruption appearing in transcripts or enrolment history. Prepare the chronology while the records are readily available.
Keep genuine academic records covering the whole program, including full-time study and the final term. A permitted leave does not automatically waive unrelated PGWP requirements such as the eligible institution and program, language or applicable field of study. Review those independently before assuming the eventual permit remains available.
Plan the return and existing permit
Check the next actual intake or module date and obtain confirmation of how to resume. Record the date studies restart, rather than only the date a return flight lands. If the student changes schools, the current transfer and new study permit instructions also need review. Leave authorization does not automatically approve a different institution.
An approved leave does not extend the study permit's printed expiry or create a travel document. Check any needed extension and re-entry arrangements separately. If studies or work already stopped before advice was obtained, prepare an accurate account of what happened and seek a case-specific review. Solving the issue requires truthful dates and usable evidence, not a cleaner but invented chronology.
