After Graduation: Canada’s 90-Day Study Permit Rule and the 180-Day PGWP Window

A study permit's printed expiry is not the only date that matters after graduation. It generally becomes invalid 90 days after completion of studies or on the printed expiry date, whichever comes first. The separate 180-day PGWP application window does not create additional permission to stay or work in Canada.

Establish when completion was first confirmed

Use the school's official completion information rather than assuming the graduation ceremony starts every immigration deadline. A completion letter, final transcript or other formal notification can establish an earlier event. Retain the first notification and ask the institution to clarify any genuine discrepancy between records.

Create a timeline with the notification date, the study permit's printed expiry and any other relevant application or travel event. Do not alter an academic date to make a deadline easier to meet. A ceremony scheduled several months later does not necessarily preserve student status or student work permission until that ceremony.

Keep the stay and application clocks separate

IRCC's PGWP guidance allows up to 180 days after confirmation of completion to apply, subject to its eligibility conditions. That is an application window. It should not be read as a general extension of a study permit or an instruction to wait until the final day.

If the permit will expire before results arrive, IRCC identifies options including applying for visitor status or leaving Canada and applying from abroad where eligible. Review the actual circumstances promptly. A visitor arrangement addresses permission to remain; it does not itself authorize employment. Eligibility to submit and authorization to work need separate conclusions.

Review work when studies end

Student off-campus work rests on specific conditions. Do not continue using the regular student allowance merely because the old permit still appears valid on its face. Once formal completion is notified, assess whether the student work basis has ended and whether another authorization applies.

IRCC permits full-time work while an eligible PGWP application is processed when its conditions are met. These include having a valid study permit when applying, completing the study program, and having been eligible for off-campus work without exceeding the permitted hours. A pending application does not create this permission for every graduate.

Know what the pending-application letter proves

For qualifying applicants, IRCC explains that work can continue until a decision even if the validity period on the WP-EXT for PGWP letter has passed. The individual still needs to meet the underlying conditions. Provide the employer with the appropriate evidence rather than treating any application receipt as equivalent to work authorization.

If the conditions are not met, IRCC says to wait for the work permit before beginning the new job. If the application is refused, work must stop on the day notification is received. Keep communications current so an important message is not missed while the graduate assumes that processing is simply taking longer.

Expiry before application requires a different review

IRCC provides instructions concerning eligible restoration and PGWP applications where student status has expired. Those instructions include deadlines, additional fees and restrictions on working. Do not apply the ordinary pending-PGWP work arrangement to a restoration case without checking the actual eligibility.

Similarly, moving into another study program has specific rules for any work between programs. The fact that two courses may later support a combined PGWP length does not establish permission to work through the gap. Use the completion confirmation, new acceptance and start date to assess the real sequence.

Prepare before the final term ends

Arrange accepted language results and any field-of-study evidence in time for submission. Check passport validity and each family member's permit separately. If travel is planned, confirm the visitor visa or eTA and re-entry arrangements independently of the work permit application. A practical plan names the document supporting today's stay and today's work, rather than relying on an expected future approval.
