Checking a PGWP CIP Code: Credential Exemptions, Six Digits and Application Dates

Where Canada's PGWP field-of-study requirement applies, check the actual six-digit Classification of Instructional Programs code for your course. A marketing label such as technology, healthcare or business analytics is not enough. First establish whether you are exempt; then match the genuine program code and applicable dates to IRCC's official eligibility instructions.

Determine whether the requirement applies

IRCC lists exemptions including graduates with a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, eligible flight school graduates, and applicants whose study permit application was submitted before November 1, 2024. The guidance also exempts PGWP applications submitted before that date. Read the category applicable to your own history rather than treating all postgraduate study as a master's degree.

A graduate certificate or diploma can have a different status from a degree even when admission requires a bachelor's qualification. Ask the awarding institution what formal credential is issued. School terminology, a translated title or the level of difficulty does not decide which immigration exception applies. Other PGWP conditions remain necessary even where the field requirement is waived.

Obtain the institution's program code

IRCC uses six-digit CIP codes based on CIP Canada 2021 for this purpose. Ask your designated learning institution to identify the code for the actual program, campus and intake. Many schools publish this information, but a broad department webpage may not distinguish all credentials delivered under a similar name.

Keep the institution's confirmation with the acceptance, program description and completion records. If two pages show different codes, ask the school to explain the discrepancy. Do not choose whichever code appears eligible without establishing its relationship to the course you will actually complete. A consultant cannot make an ineligible course eligible by selecting a more attractive number.

Use the education classification, not a job code

CIP classifies instructional programs. Canada's NOC classification describes occupations and is used for different immigration questions. A proposed future job, an employer's occupational code or a career forecast cannot replace the educational code required for the PGWP assessment.

Where you investigate a code yourself, read the classification description and exclusions rather than stopping at a similar title. This research can help you ask the institution a precise question, but should not be presented as proof that the school assigned that code to your program. Confirm the actual academic facts before making a financial commitment.

Check the relevant list and dates

IRCC says the program must be on the currently eligible list when the study permit application or PGWP application is submitted, as applicable under its instructions. A code absent from the current list may still need assessment against the study permit application date. Keep the genuine submission acknowledgement; paying tuition and submitting an immigration application are separate events.

The official page states that no eligible fields will be added or removed during 2026. This list freeze does not waive the requirement, establish eligibility for every course, or promise what the list will contain in 2027. Save the relevant official information and review the instructions again at the stage when they matter to your application.

Recheck after a course change

Transferring schools, changing credentials or combining programs can change which academic facts need assessment. An eligible code for a previous offer should not be carried automatically into a different course. Obtain updated confirmation and assess each program proposed for a combined permit length separately.

When preparing the application, follow IRCC's instructions for evidence showing that you graduated in the qualifying field. A handwritten code alone does not establish that connection. Keep the explanation concise and supported by real institutional records. Even a correctly matched code does not replace the language, study history, timing and other PGWP conditions, and it does not guarantee a later permanent residence pathway or employment outcome.
