Canada PGP Pause in 2026: New Applications, Existing Files and Super Visa Options

As of 21 October 2026, Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is paused for new intake. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says it will not accept new interest-to-sponsor forms or invite potential sponsors to apply until further notice. It is still processing applications already in the system. A target of up to 15,000 people becoming permanent residents through PGP in 2026 is an admissions target for the program; it does not mean that a new application round is open.

What the pause means for a family

If you have not submitted an interest-to-sponsor form and do not hold a PGP invitation, you cannot start a new PGP sponsorship application under the current intake status. IRCC has not announced a date for the next intake. Do not rely on older articles, social posts or a confirmation number as proof that applications are open or that an invitation is guaranteed.

If you were invited during an earlier intake and submitted a complete application, the pause does not by itself cancel that file. IRCC says it will continue processing existing applications. Keep the application number, check messages in the account used to file, and respond by the deadline on any request from IRCC. Do not send a duplicate application unless IRCC instructs you to do so.

An invitation and a confirmation number are different

In an open intake, a person who submits an interest-to-sponsor form may receive a confirmation number. That number confirms the form was received; it is not an invitation to apply and does not guarantee selection. IRCC selects potential sponsors in invitation rounds. When an invitation is issued, the invited sponsor must still meet the applicable requirements and submit a complete application within the stated deadline.

The 2025 intake was limited to people selected from the earlier pool of interest forms. IRCC’s current program page says it is not accepting applications and will not accept new interest forms or issue invitations until further notice. A future intake could use different dates or rules, so check the current government page before taking action.

PGP permanent residence and Super Visa are different

PGP is a family-class permanent-residence program. If approved, the sponsored parent or grandparent becomes a permanent resident and has the rights and obligations attached to that status. PGP applications are subject to an invitation process and limited intake.

A Parent and Grandparent Super Visa is a temporary visitor visa for eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It can allow repeated visits over a visa validity period of up to 10 years, with stays of up to five years at a time for applicants covered by the current rule. A temporary resident remains a visitor; a Super Visa does not grant permanent residence. The visa’s validity, the authorized stay for a particular entry and the passport expiry date are separate dates.

Super Visa applicants must meet the applicable host-income and private medical-insurance requirements, along with the other visitor requirements. IRCC changed the way host income can be calculated from 31 March 2026 and adjusted which insurers may provide qualifying coverage. Check the current official rules before buying a policy or submitting an application; a policy that looks adequate is not automatically eligible.

How to decide what to do next

  • If there is no PGP invitation or submitted application, treat PGP as closed to new applicants for now. Monitor IRCC’s program page for an official intake notice; do not pay anyone who claims to guarantee an invitation.

  • If a PGP application is already submitted, continue following the file and meet document or medical deadlines. A pause in intake is not the same as a refusal or a pause in processing.

  • If the family needs a temporary visit, assess whether the parent or grandparent may qualify for a Super Visa or another visitor option. Check the host’s income calculation, the insurance policy, the visitor’s circumstances and the intended travel dates separately.

  • If the parent or grandparent is already in Canada, check the expiry date of their authorized stay. An application to extend visitor status is separate from PGP and does not automatically grant permanent residence.

The latest IRCC notice located for this review is dated 15 July 2026. The government may change intake or program requirements later. Recheck the official pages before filing or making travel plans.
