Can Atlantic Canadian graduates qualify for AIP without work experience?

Eligible international graduates can use an exemption from the Atlantic Immigration Program’s work experience requirement. Check the institution, the length and format of your studies, your residence before graduation, and when you received the credential. You still need to meet the other AIP requirements, including a valid offer from a designated employer and the applicable language threshold.

Confirm the institution and how you studied

Use your credential and transcript to check your institution against IRCC’s recognized Atlantic institutions. The qualifying degree, diploma, certificate, trade or apprenticeship credential must come from a program that took at least two years. You must have studied full time throughout and held the immigration permission required for any study, work or training you did in Canada.

A program cannot support the exemption if at least half was distance learning or at least half consisted of English or French as a second language. Check the restriction if your scholarship or fellowship required you to return home to use the skills you gained. If you transferred schools or changed how you attended classes, ask for records covering the dates, delivery format and program length.

Keep residence and filing dates separate

IRCC’s work experience guidance requires at least 16 months of residence in one of the four Atlantic provinces during the final two years before graduation. The permanent residence filing instructions ask for evidence covering the 24 months before you received the credential. If your completion, graduation and credential dates differ, get the institution’s records for each and check the instructions that apply to your application.

Your credential must also be less than two years old when you apply for permanent residence. For example, if you received it in June 2025, track the endorsement process against your intended federal filing date. Sufficient residence before graduation does not extend the time to file.

Match each address to dated evidence

Build a timeline with addresses and move dates. Match it to leases, local bank transactions or other records from the relevant period. Record lengthy absences, moves to another province and any period spent taking remote classes elsewhere. A transcript helps establish when you studied. Residence records help establish where you actually lived.
