Hungary Guest Investor Family Permit Renewal: The 90- and 30-Day Rules
For a Hungary guest investor’s family member, two different 90-day rules can affect a family-reunification permit extension. The filing window opens no earlier than 90 days before the permit expires and the application must be submitted at least 30 days before expiry. Separately, the authority lists a residence-in-Hungary exception for family members of guest investors. That exception does not remove the filing window or the other extension requirements.
The filing window runs from 90 to 30 days before expiry
An extension is available only while the current residence permit is valid. The immigration authority says the application may be filed no more than 90 days before the expiry date and no later than 30 days before expiry. The first date is not a general invitation to file at any time, and an applicant should not let the permit expire before applying. Work back from the date printed on each family member’s permit and leave time to prepare and submit the file.
Guest investor family members have a residence-day exception
The general extension guidance refers to residence in Hungary for at least 90 days in any 180-day period. The authority expressly says that this residence requirement does not apply to an extension of a family-reunification permit held by a family member of a guest investor. This is an exception to that residence-day test only. It is not an automatic extension, a waiver of other evidence or permission to stay after the current permit expires.
Track the two questions separately: whether the application is within the 90-to-30-day filing window, and whether the applicant falls within the guest investor family exception to the 90/180 residence test. Even where the exception applies, check that the current permit is valid and that the family relationship and other residence conditions continue to be met.
Submit an extension through Enter Hungary
The authority says applications to extend a residence permit must be lodged through the Enter Hungary procedure platform. Before filing, check each family member’s account and identity details, sponsor information, current permit expiry date and required documents. Each relative’s extension is a separate application; renewal of the sponsor’s permit does not automatically extend a spouse’s or child’s permit.
The new permit may be shorter than ten years
The family-reunification guidance says a family member of a guest investor may receive a permit valid for up to ten years. The actual validity cannot exceed the family member’s travel document or the sponsor’s residence permit. Ten years is a maximum, not a guaranteed term for every new permit or extension. Check both expiry dates before filing because the shorter document can limit the family member’s permit.
A person-by-person pre-filing check
List each permit’s expiry date and mark the earliest filing date and latest filing date. Confirm the current permit remains valid, relationship and identity records are ready, the passport has sufficient validity, and any Enter Hungary notices or requests for documents are monitored. The authority may request further evidence or an in-person step, so an ideal filing calendar cannot promise a decision date.
For first-time applications, where and when family members can apply is a separate issue. See
卓越移民 Premiervisa Group can help organise a renewal calendar around each family member’s permit expiry. The authority decides whether the extension requirements are met and what validity period to grant. Checked against official guidance on 22 October 2026.
