Hungary Guest Investor Residence: When Can Family Apply and Move?
A spouse and eligible children may apply for residence in Hungary through family reunification with a guest investor. The immigration authority’s FAQ says family members may submit their family-reunification applications in parallel with the investor’s residence application. That does not mean they can immediately stay in Hungary on family-reunification grounds: a family member holding a guest investor visa is not entitled to stay for that purpose until the sponsor has been granted the guest investor residence permit.
Parallel filing does not mean one decision or one start date
A family member may submit an application for family reunification when the investor applies for guest investor residence, or may file later. This is a filing option, not a promise that both applications will be decided together. Keep separate records for the sponsor and each family member, including submission receipts, requests for further documents and decisions. The family’s permitted stay must be checked against the document each person actually holds.
Check where each family member can apply
The filing location depends in part on the family member’s nationality and current status. A person who is eligible for visa-free entry and does not hold a Hungarian residence permit may, under the authority’s family-reunification guidance, apply in Hungary during a lawful stay. A family member who needs a visa to enter Hungary generally has to apply outside Hungary through the competent Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission. The guest investor FAQ specifically says people subject to an entry-visa requirement cannot submit the family residence application inside Hungary.
The investor’s ability to file a guest investor residence application in Hungary therefore does not establish that a visa-required family member can file there too. Confirm the family member’s passport, nationality, competent mission and appointment rules before setting the sequence.
The sponsor’s investor visa is not the family member’s residence status
The authority distinguishes holding a guest investor visa from holding the guest investor residence permit. A family member who holds the sponsor’s guest investor visa is not entitled to stay in Hungary for family reunification until the sponsor has been granted the residence permit. The family may prepare or lodge a file where permitted, but the legal basis for the family member’s entry and stay during the waiting period must be considered separately.
If a family member already has another valid visa or residence status, check what that document allows and how long it remains valid. Permission to enter, receipt of a family-reunification application and approval of family residence are separate stages. Travel plans should follow the person’s own documents and official notices.
Prepare relationship and stay evidence for each person
A family-reunification application needs evidence of the qualifying relationship. The authority lists documents such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, adoption document or other credible evidence; the exact scope depends on the family member and the case. Check that names, dates of birth, marital details and registration records are consistent. Confirm current translation requirements for foreign-language documents before submission.
Each family member may also need personal evidence for funds, Hungarian accommodation, healthcare cover and onward travel. The investor’s fund or donation documents do not automatically establish every relative’s relationship or stay requirements. A person-by-person checklist helps identify which documents remain outstanding.
The family permit’s validity follows the sponsor’s status
The family-reunification guidance says a family member of a guest investor may receive a permit valid for up to ten years. The actual permit cannot exceed the validity of the family member’s travel document or the sponsor’s residence permit. Ten years is a maximum, not an automatic grant, permanent residence or citizenship. Check each permit and expiry date when the decision arrives.
A practical sequence to avoid gaps
First, confirm each family member’s nationality, visa requirement and current status. Second, record when the sponsor files the guest investor residence application. Third, determine whether each relative must apply outside or may apply inside Hungary. Fourth, prepare relationship, funds, accommodation and healthcare evidence. Finally, track each receipt, document request and decision separately, and confirm when the family member may actually stay under family reunification. The authority’s administrative period excludes some missing-document and procedural time, so it should not be turned into a guaranteed date for the whole family.
卓越移民 Premiervisa Group can help map the sponsor’s and family members’ steps and document checklist. Whether the applications can be filed in parallel, where each person must apply and when they may stay under family reunification depends on their nationality and current status.
