Citizenship: Source of Funds vs Source of Wealth
For a citizenship-by-investment application, prepare two connected explanations: how you built your wealth and where the particular money for the application came from. A current bank balance can show that you hold money. You may also need records explaining the activity that generated it, who owns it and how it reached the paying account.

This guide provides an evidence-organising framework for families considering Caribbean citizenship programmes. It does not prescribe one document list for every country or promise that an authority or bank will accept a particular record. Ask the responsible authorised professional to adapt the checklist to the programme and your actual financial history.
Distinguish source of wealth from source of funds
Source of wealth concerns the development of your overall financial position. Source of funds concerns the origin of the money used for a particular transaction. Financial regulators make this distinction because an account location does not, by itself, explain how someone obtained the money. BVI Financial Services Commission explanation; HMRC guidance on funds and wealth.
A hypothetical applicant may have built wealth through employment and business ownership over twenty years, while funding the citizenship application from a recent property sale. The overall history and the sale-to-bank-payment history overlap, but they answer different questions. Preparing both helps the reviewer understand the proposed transaction.
Use separate summaries rather than one long narrative. The wealth summary should explain the main stages in your financial history. The transaction summary should identify the selected money, its ownership and the path to the proposed payment. Keep documentary references beside important statements.
Why citizenship programmes examine the record
Authorities conduct background and financial checks under their own programme requirements. Grenada's published personal requirements include lawful funds, and St. Kitts and Nevis lists proof of investment funds among the documents needed for its process. The FATF/OECD also identifies the importance of examining funds, wider wealth and transfers in investment-migration programmes. Grenada requirements; St. Kitts application process; FATF/OECD report.
The migration file and the receiving bank may involve separate reviews. Ask which institution needs which record and why. A document accepted during an earlier transaction may need updating or further explanation for the present application. Keep the advice specific to the authority, bank and payment under review.
Disclose an issue to the professional reviewing your case before deciding that it is irrelevant. An unexplained transfer, previous refusal or material legal dispute can change the assessment. The aim is to present an accurate record, including difficult facts, rather than create a smooth narrative that omits them.
Build a wealth timeline
Create a table of the main sources of accumulated wealth: employment, business profits, distributions, asset sales, inheritance or other genuine sources. Enter dates, approximate amounts, ownership and available supporting records. Mark estimates as estimates and explain how you calculated them.
Keep the timeline proportionate. You do not need to write a memoir, but the reviewer should understand how the scale of your assets relates to the history described. If wealth increased after a company sale, identify the transaction and the ownership interest sold. If it accumulated through salary, show the period and saving pattern.
Explain material changes. A move between countries, a new company or a large distribution may affect the supporting documents and payment path. Attach records to the relevant event instead of sending a folder of statements with no indication of what each one establishes.
Trace the selected payment
Start with the amount you expect to use, then work backwards to its origin. Identify the asset or income generating the money, the first receiving account and any later transfers. Record currency conversions, fees and the beneficial owner at each stage.
Use a transfer schedule with transaction date, sending account, receiving account, currency, amount and supporting reference. Keep enough information to reconcile the balance without exposing unnecessary credentials. Do not include online-banking passwords, authentication codes or unrelated private access details in an application file.
If several legitimate sources contribute to the payment, show the split. A reviewer should be able to follow each part without assuming that all money in an account shares the same origin. Agree with your adviser how much account history is necessary for the formal review.
Match the evidence to the source
Financial source | Records to discuss with your adviser | Gap to investigate |
Employment savings | Employment evidence, income records, tax documents and statements | Whether the savings pattern explains the amount |
Company distribution | Ownership, accounts, distribution decision and payment record | Whether the company lawfully distributed the money to you |
Property sale | Ownership history, sale contract, completion statement and receipt | Whether net proceeds reconcile after debt and expenses |
Investment sale | Holding history, broker statements, trade and withdrawal records | Whether the investor and paying account owner match |
Inheritance or gift | Relationship, legal transfer documents and the provider's evidence | Whether the origin and transfer both need further review |
This table suggests preparation questions. The authority or bank may ask for additional records, and some documents may need certification or translation. Ask the responsible professional to identify the required format before ordering costly replacements or collecting material that does not address the issue.
Business owners: separate company and personal money
A company's bank balance does not establish that its shareholder can use that money for a personal application. Explain the legal basis for any payment to the shareholder and obtain advice on company, tax and banking requirements. The appropriate documents depend on the transaction and governing law.
For a dividend, discuss the ownership record, accounts, approval and payment trail with the company's accountant and adviser. For salary or loan repayment, explain the underlying entitlement and transaction. Avoid choosing a convenient label after the money has moved if the records support a different arrangement.
A hypothetical founder receives a distribution from a trading company and transfers it to a personal account. The working file should connect the business activity and ownership to the distribution and then to the bank receipt. A company-incorporation certificate alone would leave most of that explanation unanswered.
Property sellers: reconcile the net proceeds
Keep the acquisition or ownership record, sale agreement and completion documents. Explain mortgages, joint ownership and deductions. The amount available to the applicant may differ from the headline sale price because another owner or lender receives part of the proceeds.
Prepare a calculation linking the contractual price to the amount credited to the relevant account. Reference the supporting statement for each material deduction. If the sale proceeds pass through a lawyer's client account or another permitted intermediary, keep the record connecting those payments.
For a jointly owned property, identify the applicant's entitlement and any later transfer from a co-owner. Discuss whether that transfer constitutes a gift, settlement or another arrangement. Give the reviewer the genuine ownership and transaction documents rather than assuming a household can treat all proceeds as one person's funds.
Gifts and financial sponsors need their own review
Identify the provider, relationship, amount and legal nature of the support. Ask whether the programme permits the proposed sponsorship arrangement and what checks apply to the provider. The fact that a relative agrees to pay does not establish that the arrangement satisfies the programme.
St. Kitts and Nevis publishes specific information about financially sponsored applications, including sponsor evidence and due diligence. Other programmes may apply different rules. Obtain a programme-specific assessment before arranging a family transfer intended to fund an application. St. Kitts sponsored-application guidance.
Keep the donor's explanation and records consistent with the transfer. If the money is a loan, describe it as a loan and disclose the terms. Do not present borrowed or temporarily placed money as accumulated personal savings. Your adviser needs the actual arrangement to assess the case and identify further questions.
Investment and digital-asset records
For securities, keep records of ownership, transactions, settlement and withdrawal into the banking system. A broker's portfolio valuation and a bank receipt establish different parts of the history. Explain transfers between brokers and changes in account ownership where relevant.
Digital-asset proceeds can add questions about acquisition, custody, transfers and conversion. Obtain programme-specific advice about acceptance and additional checks before assuming that cashing out resolves the review. Preserve authentic exchange and banking records; avoid relying only on a wallet screenshot or a self-written spreadsheet.
Disclose the full relevant facts about the proposed source. A bank or authority may require more evidence or decline a particular arrangement. The professional's role is to assess those constraints and organise the record, rather than suggest a transfer pattern designed to hide the origin.
Explain gaps without inventing records
Identify a missing document, why it is unavailable and which institution may provide a replacement. Ask the employer, bank, accountant or relevant registry for an authentic record where possible. Keep the request and response so the reviewer understands what you tried to obtain.
Discuss alternative evidence with the responsible professional. An explanation can help connect genuine documents, but it does not turn an unsupported assertion into independent proof. Label a reconstruction as a reconstruction and retain the underlying records used to prepare it.
Do not alter an issued statement or ask another person to sign an inaccurate history. Correct an error through the issuer and keep the correction trail. If the evidence cannot establish a material point, obtain advice on whether to delay or reconsider the application.
Prepare translations and consistent names
List documents needing translation, certification or legalisation under the chosen programme. Confirm the required format before paying for the service. Keep the original and translated versions together with a reference the reviewer can follow.
Explain legitimate name differences across passports, bank accounts, company records and older transactions. Include previous names or transliterations where appropriate. Ask whether an official record or further declaration is needed instead of changing the spelling on a historical document yourself.
Prepare a short index describing each file, its date and the fact it supports. A reviewer can then identify an expired certificate or missing statement without opening hundreds of unrelated attachments. Keep the index updated when you replace a document with a corrected version.
Use secure document handling
Agree the receiving professional, secure channel and purpose before sending full financial records. For an initial enquiry, describe the source categories and any known complications. You do not need to submit complete bank histories through a public website message field.
Keep a record of what you sent and when. Use access controls appropriate to the sensitivity of the documents and confirm who needs access. Retain an unchanged original copy so you can answer later questions about the version submitted.
Before a payment, confirm the recipient and instructions through an independent agreed contact method. Keep the final transaction record with the supporting funds schedule. If the payment route changes, tell the adviser before proceeding so the application record continues to describe the actual movement of money.
Arrive at the assessment with a clear brief
Provide the proposed citizenship programme, family members, funding amount and main wealth sources. Identify the asset or income you expect to use and any third-party involvement. State which documents you have and which you need help obtaining.
Ask for a written action list separating eligibility questions, missing evidence and payment planning. Agree who will resolve each issue and when the professional will review the complete record. The objective is a truthful, understandable file that the responsible institutions can assess; no document checklist guarantees their decision.
Reconcile a transaction before the formal review
Consider a hypothetical applicant who sells investments in two accounts, combines the proceeds and converts the money into the payment currency. Prepare a schedule showing each sale, settlement, withdrawal and conversion. Explain a difference between the sale proceeds and final balance through genuine charges or other documented transactions.
Ask the reviewer to follow the schedule without your verbal explanation. If they cannot connect an entry to its supporting statement, improve the index or obtain the missing record. Keep the underlying evidence unchanged and distinguish your calculation from the bank's issued documents.
Repeat this reconciliation after the payment occurs. Replace an intended transfer date with the actual date and retain the remittance confirmation. Tell the adviser about a material difference before they finalise the submission or answer an authority's question. Your evidence file should describe the completed transaction, including legitimate changes, instead of preserving a plan that no longer matches events.
