New Passport While an Australian Visitor Visa 600 Is Pending: What to Update
Update the application before a decision
If you receive a new passport while a Visitor visa (subclass 600) application is being processed, tell the Department of Home Affairs promptly so it can link the new travel document to the application. The Department’s passport guidance covers both a visa application and an existing visa. Do not assume the old passport details will transfer automatically.
This is a different stage from renewing a passport after a visa grant. While the 600 application is pending, you are updating the record under assessment. Keep the submission confirmation and continue checking ImmiAccount for the application status and messages.
If you lodged through ImmiAccount
Sign in to the ImmiAccount used to manage the application. Open the relevant application, select “Update details”, then “Change of passport details”. Choose the applicant, enter the new passport information and the reason for the change, and submit it. The Department lists passport number, name, passport country, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority and place of issue among the details that can be updated this way.
Compare every entry with the new passport’s biodata page before submitting. If your name or passport country has also changed, provide the details the form requests; changing only the passport number may not address the full change. Save the confirmation and check the application again later.
If you cannot use ImmiAccount
If you do not have an ImmiAccount, the Department directs applicants to its New Passport Details web form. Some applications cannot be imported into ImmiAccount, and some travel-document or legacy-system cases, as well as changes to sex, gender or date of birth details, may need a different route. Check the Department’s current list and follow the instructions for your application.
The Department currently lists about one to three business days for an ImmiAccount update and up to 14 days for the web form. These are published processing estimates, not guaranteed completion times. If you can update the application in ImmiAccount, follow that route rather than filing a duplicate web form as well.
Before travelling while the application is pending
After submitting the change, check the application and Department messages to confirm the new passport details have been linked. If travel is close, do not treat a submission receipt as proof that processing is complete. Check your options with the Department or airline and allow time for the update. Changing passport details does not decide the pending 600 application.
An Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) has a separate rule: it cannot be transferred to a new passport, and a new ETA must be applied for using that passport. This 601 rule should not be applied to a subclass 600 visa. For a passport renewed after a 600 grant, see our separate guide to updating a new passport after grant.
