Renewed Your Passport After an Australian Visitor Visa 600 Grant? Update It Before Travel
If you renew your passport after an Australian Visitor visa (subclass 600) is granted, notify the Department of Home Affairs promptly so it can link the new travel document to your existing visa. Do not assume the visa details will move automatically from the old passport. After submitting the update, check that the new passport is linked before you travel.
Use ImmiAccount if you have access
The Department recommends using ImmiAccount. Sign in, open the relevant application, select “Update details”, then “Change of passport details”. Choose the applicant, enter the new passport information and the reason for the change, and submit the update. The details that can be changed in ImmiAccount include the passport number, name, passport country, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority and place of issue.
Keep the submission confirmation and sign in again to check the status. The Department currently lists three business days as the ImmiAccount processing time. This is an estimate published by the Department, not a guarantee that every update will be completed within that period. Submit early if your departure date is close and monitor your account for messages.
If you cannot submit through ImmiAccount
If you do not have an ImmiAccount, use the Department’s New Passport Details online form. The Department says processing may take up to 14 days. If you do have an ImmiAccount, follow its instructions to use Update details rather than submitting the separate form as well.
Some changes cannot be made in ImmiAccount. Examples include an application that cannot be imported, certain paper or legacy-system applications, and a change to sex, gender or date of birth details on the passport. Follow the Department’s instructions for the online form or the relevant application channel. If your name or passport nationality has changed, provide the information requested; changing only the passport number may not be enough.
Check these details before departure
First, confirm the Department has received and processed the new passport details. Second, use the new passport details to check your visa record in VEVO, including the visa status, validity and conditions. Third, make sure the travel document details on your airline booking match the passport you will use. If the passport has not yet been linked, contact the Department or airline to confirm your options before going to the airport.
This guidance is for holders of a standard Visitor visa (subclass 600). An Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) is different: the Department says an ETA cannot be transferred to a new passport, so the holder must apply for a new ETA using the new passport. Do not apply that subclass 601 rule to a subclass 600 visa.

Checked against Department of Home Affairs information on 21 October 2026. Processing times can change; follow your ImmiAccount notices and the Department’s current instructions. Updating passport details does not guarantee a visa outcome or entry to Australia. If your name, nationality or other identity details have changed, follow the Department’s instructions for that change.
