Does This Job Count as Specified Work? Check the Actual Role, Worksite and Dates

A recruitment advertisement saying a job counts towards another working-holiday visa is not enough to establish eligibility. First identify your subclass, the visa stage you are preparing for and the actual work. Check the activity, worksite, dates and immigration status together before calculating any qualifying period. A remote town or farm business name answers only part of that question.

Get facts that can be checked before accepting

Ask the actual employing organisation for its name, the full worksite address, normal duties and expected work period. A description such as Queensland farm job or hotel position is too broad. Where work may move between sites, distinguish confirmed locations from possibilities. An eligible address for the first assignment cannot automatically cover every later assignment.

Retain the advertisement and the explanation of your particular role. Neither a recruitment promise nor an offer to issue a certificate is government recognition of the work. Before committing to accommodation, transport or relocation costs, identify which conditions have been checked and which facts are still missing. Money already paid does not supply the missing eligibility evidence.

Match duties and location rather than business labels

An agricultural business can employ people in several different activities. Its industry does not automatically bring every office, sales or site role within specified work. Describe what you would actually do in a typical week and compare that activity with the official definitions. Changing the job title on paper without changing the work does not resolve a mismatch.

Record the worksite, head office and home separately. A payslip may show the employer's registered office rather than the place where the activity occurred. Living in a remote postcode does not establish that you worked there. Labour-hire, mobile and multi-site arrangements need a factual account of where each relevant period was performed, rather than a convenient nearby address.

Hospitality and volunteering need their own checks

The official 417 guidance sets geographic and timing requirements for tourism and hospitality work. It does not treat every cafe, restaurant or accommodation business in Australia as eligible. Check the relevant activity and period as well as the address. Regional definitions used for skilled migration or another graduate visa do not replace the working-holiday rules.

Certain officially defined disaster-recovery activities have specific arrangements. Ordinary charitable activity, helping a friend or unpaid accommodation exchange does not qualify merely because it is called volunteering. Identify the precise activity, place and dates and check the corresponding provisions. Keep unresolved work out of a confirmed total rather than assuming the favourable answer first.

Recheck when the assignment changes

A change of duties, worksite or actual employer needs a dated record and another comparison. Retain hours, pay, locations and supporting documents for each segment. Moving home is a separate event. Preserve the whole employment history, including gaps and potentially ineligible periods, so the calculation can be explained rather than edited into apparent continuity.

Specified-work eligibility and permission to work for the same employer are separate checks. Work may fit the specified-work category while the holder still needs to consider their work conditions. Conversely, lawful employment is not automatically qualifying work for another visa. Once the scope is established, reconcile the period with genuine rosters, payslips and employer records. An initial enquiry can provide a factual role summary and visa stage, with private originals supplied through an appropriate process. Final acceptance depends on the full rules and evidence, not a recruitment guarantee.
