Your First Working Holiday Payslip: TFN, PAYG Withholding and the 2026–27 Rates
Start by reconciling gross earnings, PAYG withholding and the amount paid into your bank account. Dividing the bank payment by your hours does not, by itself, show that the employer has underpaid the agreed hourly rate. For 2026–27, employer registration, TFN information and payment circumstances affect working-holiday withholding. A flat 15% is not the final answer for every worker and every dollar of income.
Match the work records to the payment
Compare the contract, actual hours, roster and pay period with the basic pay, allowances, tax and other deductions on the payslip. A difference between gross pay and the deposit may have an explanation, but each item still needs a proper basis. Another employee receiving a similar amount is not enough to establish that your payment is correct. Superannuation is also different from cash available in your ordinary bank account for this week's rent.
Keep the original records. If a name, employer or pay period is wrong, identify the specific field for the payroll contact and retain the correction trail. Do not edit a payslip yourself or add days that were not worked to support a future visa application. Consistency should reflect what happened rather than numbers adjusted afterwards.
Ask which withholding arrangement payroll applied
Schedule 15 of the 2026 withholding instrument says a registered working-holiday employer can apply the 15% arrangement to the first AUD45,000 paid to an individual worker in the income year, subject to the relevant TFN and other requirements. An employer that has not registered for working-holiday withholding must use a different withholding treatment. Sharing a visa subclass with a colleague does not establish that the payment circumstances are identical.
2026–27 taxable income band in Table A | Rate for the relevant band |
AUD0–45,000 | 15% |
AUD45,001–135,000 | 30% on the portion over AUD45,000 |
AUD135,001–190,000 | 37% on the portion over AUD135,000 |
Over AUD190,000 | 45% on the portion over AUD190,000 |
Crossing a band does not mean every dollar of annual income is retrospectively taxed at the highest rate. Actual periodic withholding must follow the official rules and calculation tools, rather than a rough division of an annual table. Multiple jobs, changing employers and other income also need reconciliation at the annual tax stage.
A TFN does not grant work permission
A TFN identifies you for tax purposes. It does not create or extend visa work rights. Complete the declaration truthfully rather than copying another traveller's answers to reduce withholding. There are separate rules for a worker who has applied for or enquired about a TFN, including declaration and timing requirements. Payroll needs the real information rather than a blanket assumption about anyone whose number has not yet arrived.
Schedule 15 also covers certain bridging visas meeting its stated conditions, including the connection with a pending 417 or 462 application and the most recent substantive visa. It does not apply to every bridging visa. When your visa circumstances change, give the appropriate payroll contact accurate effective details rather than continuing to rely on an old label.
Withholding is not the completed annual assessment
A payslip deduction and the final annual tax outcome are different stages. Tax residency and any special treatment require the true facts, rather than an assumption based only on a passport or a few months at an address. Where treaty issues or several income sources arise, an appropriate tax professional needs the relevant background. Do not promise a refund simply because the worker plans to leave Australia.
Tax records can support evidence of employment, but paying tax does not establish that the activity, location and period satisfy specified-work requirements for another working-holiday visa. Superannuation and visa extensions have their own rules too. Prepare a short query listing the pay period, hours, earnings, TFN declaration information and unexplained difference. Keep personal tax identifiers out of public groups, and budget from actual disposable pay rather than gross earnings or an assumed future refund.
