Working Holiday Final Pay: Casual Work, Annual Leave and Payment Deadlines

When your Australian working holiday job ends, final pay needs an item-by-item check. It can include wages still owing, applicable penalties and allowances, unused annual leave and other entitlements where they apply. A 417 or 462 visa does not automatically make every worker a casual employee. Establish the actual employment arrangement before calculating what should be paid.

Check the employment type first

Review your contract, actual arrangements, applicable award or enterprise agreement and payroll records. If the classification is disputed, ask the employer or an appropriate service to clarify it. Do not use the visa label alone to decide employment rights, or assume that one word on a document resolves every classification question.

Fair Work states that casual employees do not receive ordinary paid annual leave, while full-time and part-time employees have annual-leave entitlements. Casual loading is not an additional accumulated annual-leave balance waiting to be released on departure. If employment type changed, preserve the relevant periods rather than applying one treatment to the entire job.

Reconcile the final working period

List the last dates worked, ordinary hours, overtime, applicable higher rates and allowances, and compare them with payroll periods already paid. Money received on your last day may concern an earlier period. Check whether later work remains outstanding rather than treating the latest deposit as proof that everything is complete.

For piecework, retain the relevant output, time and pay records needed to review the applicable arrangement. Mark disputed hours, conditional bonuses or expenses separately. A convenient total should not erase unresolved items, and gross entitlements, tax treatment and the final bank payment should remain distinguishable.

Unused annual leave is different from sick leave

Accrued unused annual leave must be paid when employment ends. The amount must match what the employee would have received if they had taken that leave during employment. Where annual leave loading or another relevant payment would have applied, check its inclusion. Do not apply a percentage from another worker’s award to everyone.

Ordinary sick and carer’s leave is not paid out on termination. Payment in lieu of notice, redundancy and long-service-leave amounts depend on whether they apply and their relevant rules. These are not automatic additions to every resignation. Ask payroll to explain the basis for each item rather than multiplying every unused leave balance by the same rate.

Seven days is a common award rule, not a universal deadline

Most awards require final pay within seven days after the last day of employment. Check the actual award or enterprise agreement, however, and any National Employment Standards requirement for earlier payment. Where no relevant final-pay rule exists, the Fair Work Act applies. A friend’s pay cycle is not evidence of your own deadline.

Where an employer elects to make applicable payment in lieu of notice instead of requiring the notice period to be worked, the NES requires that payment before or on termination. Check it separately from the timing of other final-pay items. A request for payroll to calculate a payment is not the same as approval or receipt.

Do not accept an unexplained exit deduction

If the employer proposes a deduction for insufficient notice, accommodation or another expense, request the actual basis, amount and period. An award allowing a particular deduction does not authorise keeping all wages and leave. Retain keys-return records, service receipts and the original payslips without modifying them.

Before travelling home, keep reliable contact details and copies of the contract, hours and payment records. Superannuation contributions and the final wage deposit are different records; departure does not automatically refund all super or tax. Settling final pay also does not confirm specified-work eligibility for another working holiday visa or extend your current permission.
