Australia Visitor Visa 600 Health Exams: When You Need One and How to Book

Subclass 600 applicants do not all need to arrange a health examination before lodging. Home Affairs specifically lists a medical examination and serum creatinine/eGFR test for applicants aged 75 or older who apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600). Other applicants may also be asked to complete examinations depending on the visa, intended stay, planned activities, country of application and individual circumstances.

Check your own assessment instead of guessing

Age and visa subclass alone do not tell every applicant whether an examination is required. Home Affairs considers factors including the visa, how long you plan to stay, what you intend to do in Australia, where you apply from and significant medical circumstances. Applicants aged 75 or older have a listed subclass 600 examination requirement. Being younger than 75 does not automatically mean no examination will be requested, and an examination is not a guarantee of a visa grant.

Do not book tests based only on a relative’s experience. The referral for your application identifies the examinations required. If you completed relevant examinations in the previous 12 months, whether they can be reused depends on your referral and Home Affairs instructions.

Find the request in ImmiAccount

For an online application, open the application in ImmiAccount and look under “Application Status” for “View health assessment”. If examinations are required, the page shows an “Organise health examinations” link. Complete the medical history to receive the referral letter and HAP ID. If no such link appears, do not add tests based on guesswork; follow any separate request or letter issued for your case.

For a paper application, the processing officer will contact you if examinations are needed and provide referral information containing a HAP ID. The clinic uses that identifier to locate your health case. Only applicants whose circumstances and visa type allow it may obtain a HAP ID before lodging through My Health Declarations, so do not assume every subclass 600 applicant can complete examinations upfront.

Book with the right clinic and bring the right documents

Outside Australia, use a Department-approved panel physician or clinic. In Australia, follow Home Affairs instructions to arrange examinations through Bupa Medical Visa Services. Give the clinic the HAP ID on your referral and check that the appointment covers the examinations listed for your case.

Bring your original valid passport and the referral letter or Health Examination List showing your HAP ID. Also bring prescription glasses or contact lenses, specialist reports for known conditions and any previous chest X-rays, if applicable. A phone photo or photocopy does not replace the original passport required by the appointment instructions.

If you cannot meet the requested deadline

Check the deadline and the requested tests, then book as early as possible. If you cannot complete the examinations within the timeframe in the request letter, Home Affairs says to notify the Department through ImmiAccount and attach details. A booking alone does not show that you have completed the requirement. Health assessment results are generally valid for 12 months, but whether a result can be used for your application depends on the referral and the Department’s instructions.

The clinic conducts the tests; Home Affairs assesses whether the health requirement is met. A medical appointment does not guarantee a visa outcome, and a private doctor’s opinion is not a substitute for the Department’s assessment. Checked against official information on 21 October 2026. Your ImmiAccount and case-specific correspondence control the exact examinations and deadline.
