Australia Visitor 600 After a Campus Visit: Applying Offshore for a Student Visa

Finding a suitable school during an Australian visit does not let a Visitor 600 holder apply for a Student visa in Australia. Under the current official rules, affected temporary visa holders must lodge outside Australia and also be outside Australia when the visa is granted. The specified list includes subclass 600 in any stream.

Check the current visa before the course offer

Begin with the full visitor grant notice, VEVO information, actual entry date and permitted stay. Record where the prospective student is now and what permission each accompanying person holds. A school discussing enrolment does not change these documents or extend their dates.

Keep the visitor permission and the intended student application as separate files. The former determines the present stay; the latter concerns a proposed future status. Do not treat a future course start or an appointment with an adviser as permission to remain beyond the current lawful period.

The official onshore-application guidance describes limited exemptions for certain existing Student visa holders. Those provisions should not be transferred to a Visitor 600 holder merely because the proposed course is a doctorate or represents academic progression. For affected temporary visa holders, the guidance states that there are no exemptions to the offshore rule.

Turn the campus visit into a course decision

Compare the actual courses, locations, duration, admission requirements and costs using the institutions' formal information. A campus tour can inform a genuine decision, but a conversation with admissions staff is not the same as a formal offer. Keep unresolved matters clearly marked until the school confirms them.

If professional recognition matters to the course choice, check it with the relevant institution or regulator. A promotional statement about future work or migration should not be treated as proof of your own later eligibility. The education decision deserves assessment beyond whether a course can issue enrolment documents.

Separate the offer, enrolment evidence and visa

Ask the institution which stages have been completed: application, offer, acceptance, payment and Confirmation of Enrolment. Check the student's details and the relevant course dates against the actual documents. A message saying that a place has been arranged may still leave required steps incomplete.

If the intake changes, retain both the earlier and updated notices and establish whether submitted information needs updating. Changing a date in a personal spreadsheet does not amend a school record or immigration application. Clarify which matters the education provider handles and which require immigration advice.

Plan the offshore stage and lawful stay separately

Arrange actual departure and the offshore application process around the person's circumstances. A flight booking does not prove departure. The grant-location requirement also remains relevant while the application is pending, so any later travel must be assessed against both the application rules and the permission actually held.

Do not assume an offshore Student application provides an Australian onshore bridging status. Current visitor dates continue to matter. Likewise, accommodation payments and an institution agreeing to defer a course do not themselves extend a visa.

If the visitor permission carries No Further Stay, examine that condition separately. A waiver request or decision does not remove every independent restriction on applying for a Student visa. Resolving one condition should not be advertised as permission to bypass the offshore application rule.

Explain the changed study plan truthfully

Keep a clear account of the original visit, what the campus research established and why the particular course now makes sense. Use real education and work history, actual institution records and a realistic financial plan. Do not rewrite the past to fit a generic story or present future employment as guaranteed.

Before committing further funds, agree a practical sequence for course evidence, departure, application and any intake changes. Review each family member's position independently. The next useful step is a documented plan that respects the current stay and the proposed study, rather than an unsupported promise of an onshore conversion.
