Can an Australian Permanent Resident Sponsor Parents for a Visitor 600 Visa?

An adult child holding Australian permanent residence does not automatically establish a parent's eligibility for the Visitor 600 Sponsored Family stream. The proposed sponsor must meet the relevant citizenship or permanent-residence, age, settlement and relationship requirements, while each parent still has an individual visa application to satisfy.

Identify the stream before preparing sponsorship

Visiting family describes a purpose; it does not by itself establish which Visitor stream is appropriate. Home Affairs Form 1149 is used for sponsorship in the Sponsored Family stream and can also be used where the department requests sponsorship in a Tourist-stream application. An invitation letter does not make the two procedures interchangeable.

Separate three roles in the plan: inviting the visitor, paying travel or living expenses, and undertaking formal sponsorship. A person may provide useful financial support without that support alone establishing the formal sponsor's eligibility. Ask which role each document is intended to prove before collecting signatures.

Verify the sponsor's actual position

The official form requires an Australian citizen or permanent resident aged at least 18 who is settled in Australia. Gather evidence of the relevant status and the person's real residence circumstances. Merely intending to relocate, holding a temporary visa or using an Australian correspondence address should not be assumed to establish these conditions.

Keep the dates of obtaining status, beginning residence and any later changes together. Do not turn settled into an invented universal checklist or period without checking the applicable requirements. A clear timeline helps distinguish missing evidence from a qualification question that remains unresolved.

Prove the relationship rather than relying on a label

The official material specifies eligible relationships and certain family-unit arrangements. Parents, children and siblings are among the listed relationships, but the wider family rules should be read precisely. An informal family term or a friend's willingness to help does not establish the same basis.

Create a simple relationship diagram and connect each link to the appropriate birth, marriage, adoption or other formal record. Resolve name changes and passport spelling differences using genuine evidence. Do not adjust a translation simply to hide a difference between the sponsor and visitor records.

Disclose previous sponsorships

Existing sponsorships and a previous sponsored visitor's compliance can affect the proposed sponsor's position. Record whom the person previously sponsored, the relevant visa status and any formal notices. Do not omit an unresolved history because the present application concerns a different parent.

The official form describes restrictions associated with earlier sponsorships and breaches. Their application should be checked against the actual history. Someone returning overseas does not, on its own, answer every question about whether a past condition was met or whether another sponsorship can be provided now.

Understand the undertaking before signing

Form 1149 includes a substantive sponsorship undertaking concerning financial obligations to the Commonwealth arising from the visitor's stay and compliance with visa conditions. The sponsor should read the completed information and understand the responsibility personally, rather than treating the signature as a courtesy for the family.

A security bond may be requested in an individual case. Follow the department's written request if this occurs; do not treat a bond as a standard professional service fee or assume that lodging it secures approval. Government application charges, any requested security and private travel or advisory costs should be recorded separately.

Keep the parents' applications individual

Each Sponsored Family visitor submits their own online application, with the completed sponsorship form attached as required. A shared itinerary does not turn the parents into one visa applicant. Check each passport, purpose, supporting record and other applicable requirement independently.

Prepare three evidence sections before committing to a timetable: the visitors' circumstances, the sponsor's eligibility and the relationship and funding records linking them. This makes the next action concrete without promising a grant, a particular stay period or a fixed decision date.
