Australia Visitor Visa 600 on a Cruise: Does a Round Trip Reset Your Stay?

A round-trip cruise does not reset the stay period on an Australian Visitor visa 600 if Home Affairs considers it a round trip. Check the itinerary with the operator and read your own visa grant conditions before travelling.

Does a cruise from Australia and back count as leaving the country, so a Visitor visa 600 holder starts a new stay period on return? Home Affairs says that if the itinerary is a round-trip cruise, time spent on the cruise counts as time in Australia. The traveller is not considered to have left Australia, so the cruise does not reset the visa stay period.

Confirm whether the itinerary is a round-trip cruise

Do not decide from the word “cruise” on a ticket or from an overseas port call alone. Home Affairs advises travellers to ask the cruise operator or travel agent whether the itinerary is considered a round-trip cruise. Routes can differ in their starting port, ending port and stops. Give the operator the full itinerary and keep its written response.

Cruise days still count toward the existing stay

If Home Affairs considers the itinerary a round-trip cruise, do not treat the days at sea as time outside Australia and expect a new stay period when the ship returns. The permitted stay remains the period or dates stated in your own visa grant and is subject to the conditions attached to that visa. A cruise does not extend the existing visa period or change the dates in the grant notice.

A later separate entry is a different question

Whether a round-trip cruise resets the stay period is different from whether your visa permits another separate entry later. Before travelling, check your grant notice or VEVO for the visa validity, number of entries and permitted stay. A visa still within its validity period does not, by itself, mean that every return to Australia starts a new full stay period.

Checks to make before departure

  • Give the cruise operator the complete route, departure and return ports, and stopovers; ask whether it is considered a round-trip cruise.

  • Check your own Visitor 600 grant notice and VEVO for the stay period, validity and number of entries.

  • Plan the return date using the grant conditions; do not calculate a new stay from the ticket dates alone.

  • Keep the operator’s reply, itinerary and visa grant notice so you can recheck them before departure.

Home Affairs also says you need a visa if you enter Australia during a cruise. If the operator cannot confirm how the route is classified, or you are unsure about the conditions on your grant, check with the relevant authority before travelling. This article explains the general published rule and does not determine an individual visa holder’s record.
