Switching From a UK Student Visa to Skilled Worker: Course Dates, CoS and PhD Study

A sponsored job offer does not by itself establish when a UK Student can switch to Skilled Worker permission. Check the course status, proposed job start and the applicable switching condition before arranging full-time employment. The student's present work conditions remain a separate question while the new application is prepared.

Build the academic timeline first

GOVUK identifies the relevant Student switching alternatives: completing the sponsored course, a job start after the course has finished, or at least 24 months of full-time PhD study. These are alternatives with their own evidence. A graduation ceremony, expected dissertation mark and official course end should not be treated as interchangeable dates.

Obtain the institution's formal information about the actual course and stage reached. If the program has been extended or interrupted, preserve the revised academic record. Do not ask a school to put an earlier completion date on a letter merely because an employer wants the role to start sooner. The supporting explanation should connect the real academic facts to the applicable requirement.

Check the new employment independently

The job still needs to satisfy Skilled Worker requirements and be supported by the appropriate CoS. Record the employing entity, duties, occupation code, salary, hours and start date. A recruitment message saying sponsorship is available is not equivalent to a CoS for the particular role. Ask the prospective employer which details are final and which remain subject to approval.

The start date entered for sponsorship should reflect the actual arrangement and the student's academic position. Resolve differences between the contract, CoS and school documents before submission. If the employer changes the role or timing, get the changed facts reviewed rather than relying on an assessment of the earlier offer.

Keep switching and salary concessions distinct

A Student-related new entrant salary option has separate conditions. In particular, the PhD study period mentioned for a salary option should not be copied into the switching requirement. Passing one part of the assessment does not establish every other part, and an employer's eligibility calculation should identify which rule it is applying.

Likewise, a course being at postgraduate level does not automatically establish the credential or historical conditions needed for a particular concession. Preserve the official qualification details and previous permission history. If a lower salary option is not available, assess the actual alternative salary and job rather than describing the student background as a general exemption.

Plan current work and the application stages

Permission to accept an offer and permission to perform particular work are different matters. Before changing hours or duties, have the actual Student conditions and application stage checked. A saved form, adviser invoice or intended submission date should not be presented to an employer as a government decision granting new permission.

The in-country switching application must be made within the applicable deadline. Record the submission acknowledgement and identity requirements alongside the current expiry date. Do not assume that preparation has protected status where a valid application has not been submitted. If a deadline or evidence problem has already arisen, disclose the real sequence so that the available options can be assessed.

Include travel and dependants in the plan

GOVUK warns that travelling outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before a decision withdraws an in-country application. Discuss conferences, holidays and family visits before submission. A university vacation does not remove that application consequence.

A partner and children do not automatically switch when the student does. Record their own permission, eligibility and expiry, including any occupation-related restrictions that may affect dependants. Before committing to a job start or family move, assemble the course documents, CoS, current permissions and actual travel dates. 卓越移民 Premiervisa Group can help organise the file for an appropriately qualified adviser to assess each person's next immigration step.
