UK Skilled Worker PhD Salary Options: Relevant Degrees, Ecctis and Going Rates
A doctorate does not automatically reduce the salary required for every UK Skilled Worker job. The occupation must be eligible for the PhD salary option, the qualification must meet the applicable standard and its subject must be relevant to the role. Check those points before an employer builds the offer around a reduced going rate.
Start with the sponsored occupation
Obtain the actual duties and occupation code, then check the current list of jobs eligible for the PhD salary option. A research-related title or the applicant's academic background alone does not establish eligibility. The employer should explain the work being sponsored rather than choosing a code solely to obtain a discount.
Where duties combine research, management and commercial activities, retain a clear description of the real role. The application should be consistent with the contract and CoS. If the position changes during recruitment, revisit the assessment instead of relying on advice based on an earlier job description.
Establish the qualification and its relevance
GOVUK refers to a UK PhD or an overseas doctorate-level equivalent. For an overseas qualification, the specified Ecctis assessment is relevant to confirming equivalence. Keep the actual award and supporting records, with any required translations. A university's reputation or a professional title does not replace evidence of the qualification obtained.
The degree must also be relevant to the UK job. Ask the employer for a factual explanation connecting the subject and research to the proposed duties. A generic recommendation describing the applicant as talented is less useful than a clear account of how the qualification relates to the work. Do not invent research projects or rewrite the degree subject to create a connection.
Use the right STEM or non-STEM calculation
Relevant qualification | Standard going-rate percentage | Annual minimum |
STEM PhD | 80% | £33,400 |
Non-STEM PhD | 90% | £37,500 |
GOVUK currently describes a relevant STEM PhD option with 80 percent of the standard going rate and at least £33,400 a year. For a relevant non-STEM PhD, the figures are 90 percent and at least £37,500. Both the annual amount and the occupation-specific calculation matter; reaching one does not establish the other.
Use the applicable rules and salary table for the actual application. A historic or transitional option may have different conditions and should not be selected simply because a lower figure appears elsewhere in the rules. Ask for the qualifying basis, relevant table and calculation to be recorded together.
Separate academic classification from immigration assumptions
A course or university webpage may use broad descriptions of technology, management or science. That wording alone should not settle whether the qualification is treated as STEM for the proposed immigration option. Provide the complete award and subject information for assessment rather than relying on a translated course title.
A postdoctoral job has its own potential salary provision and conditions. It should not be merged with the PhD qualification option or a new entrant calculation. Identify the actual basis being claimed before selecting a percentage, grant period or expected later salary. The most favourable elements from different options cannot simply be combined.
Check the rest of the application independently
A valid PhD salary claim does not remove sponsorship, English, identity or suitability requirements. Research employment may also need an ATAS assessment depending on the actual circumstances. The degree's relevance to a salary option does not establish that all research-related approvals have been obtained.
Likewise, a qualification assessment for this purpose and evidence of English-medium study can involve different questions. Ask what the particular document proves and which requirement it addresses. Avoid paying for an assessment on the assumption that one result will necessarily cover every part of the visa application.
Keep evidence an employer can explain
Retain the award, applicable equivalence assessment, role description, relevance explanation, salary calculation and genuine contract. Review them if the employer changes the proposed duties or remuneration. 卓越移民 Premiervisa Group can help organise those documents for an appropriately qualified adviser to assess with the sponsor, without treating an academic credential as a guarantee of visa approval.
