Third 417 Work Evidence: Connecting the Second Visa, Bridging Periods and Actual Employment

The ordinary third-417 framework involves six months of specified work in the relevant second-stage circumstances. Having worked on farms for six months at some point does not answer every requirement. The activities, address, dates and permission held at the time need to align. Work beyond the first-year amount needed for the second application cannot simply be carried forward without checking the rules.

Establish the passport arrangement first

Eligible UK passport holders, including BN(O) holders within the official definition, have a specified-work exception for relevant applications lodged on or after 1 July 2024. Other passports do not acquire that treatment merely through residence in the same place. The exception does not remove age, participation history, other criteria or current work and study conditions.

If another passport was used previously, retain the actual grants and entry history before assessing the next application. A replacement document does not create a fresh set of lifetime participation entitlements. Earlier pandemic-related circumstances also have their own scope; they should not be turned into a general exception for everyone applying now.

Put the visa history beside the employment history

Use one timeline for the first and second grants, commencement, expiry and actual locations. Use a second for employers, activities, worksites and dates. Identify the periods that belong to the relevant stage before calculating work. A private note saying second year does not establish that the second visa was already in effect during that employment.

Bridging periods need the originating application and actual commencement dates. The official specified-work framework has particular circumstances connected with a second-417 application, rather than treating work on every BVA as eligible. Permission to work and eligibility to use that work for a third 417 are separate questions. Supply the complete record if another visa application also affected your position.

A continuing employer does not prove unchanged work

A worker may move from production to office duties, or from one address to another. Split the periods using actual change dates. The same company name does not establish that every activity and location remained eligible. Recruitment advertising promising third-year days or an employer's previous experience with someone else does not decide the outcome for your actual job.

  • Keep every relevant grant and its effective period.

  • Connect the second application to any relevant bridging record.

  • Record employer, actual worksite, activities and changes.

  • Retain rosters, hours, pay records and corresponding payment evidence.

  • Identify uncertain periods explicitly instead of assigning them to the most favourable stage.

Use the official calculation method for the six-month requirement. The number of payslips alone is not the test. Part-time patterns, rest days and overlapping jobs require the correct treatment; overtime or two jobs on one date cannot automatically compress the whole period. First establish that the activity qualifies, then calculate the supported period. An exact total is not useful if it includes ineligible work.

Explain dates rather than altering them

The last payroll deposit, reference issue date and actual final work day may differ. Preserve the originals and explain what each date means. Obtain missing records from the issuing organisation where possible. Do not borrow a colleague's roster, amend visa notices or purchase invented work history to make the documents appear consistent.

For a review, provide the connected history rather than only a cumulative-days spreadsheet. Identify whether the gap concerns activities, dates or visa status so the right evidence can be obtained. Answer any specific government request directly instead of adding more payslips that leave the visa-stage question unresolved. Preparing a third application does not extend the second visa: current stay, work and travel must remain supported by actual permission until any next decision is made.
