Can You Travel While an Australian Subclass 494 Application Is Pending?

You may be able to travel while a subclass 494 application is pending, but the answer depends on the visa that is currently in effect and whether it permits you to return. Home Affairs says an applicant who is in Australia does not have to notify the Department simply because they plan to travel while a 494 application is being processed. The applicant still needs a valid visa to return to Australia.

Start with the visa you hold today

A pending 494 application is not itself a travel permission. Check the grant notice and your visa conditions in VEVO, then confirm the visa will remain valid for the full trip and permits re-entry. A visa that allows you to stay in Australia may not allow you to leave and return. Do not rely only on the application receipt or a planned 494 outcome.

If you are on a bridging visa

If a Bridging visa A or C is in effect, leaving Australia will generally cause that bridging visa to cease. Home Affairs says only a Bridging visa B (BVB) lets a bridging-visa holder leave and return while a substantive visa application is being decided. You must apply while in Australia and have the BVB granted before you depart. Check the travel period stated in the grant: a BVB may allow one trip or several, but only within the specified dates.

A BVB is not automatic

The Department considers the reason for travel and when it expects to decide the substantive application. The BVB page also requires substantial reasons for travel and supporting documents. Make the request early enough for a decision before departure, but use the current Department guidance rather than treating any suggested lead time as a guarantee. If the travel period has ended, a new BVB must be granted before another departure.

Returning on another visa has separate conditions

Some people may hold a substantive visa with its own travel facility. Others may need a different visa to return. If you seek to enter on a Visitor visa while waiting for a work visa decision, the Visitor visa remains subject to its own conditions and does not permit work. A pending 494 application does not remove those restrictions or guarantee entry.

Before booking, check these points

Confirm which visa is currently in effect for every traveller. Check its expiry date, travel facility and conditions in VEVO and the grant notice. If relying on a BVB, confirm that it has been granted and that the return date falls within its travel period. Keep copies of the application notice, visa grants and travel evidence. If an application decision or visa expiry may occur during the trip, get advice on the specific timeline before leaving.
