Slovenia Digital Nomad Eligibility: Overseas Employment, Civil-Law Contracts and Self-Employment
Slovenia's digital nomad temporary residence permit concerns non-EU and non-EEA nationals working remotely through communication technology for an entity based outside Slovenia, or as a self-employed person abroad. The government identifies the central distinction as not entering Slovenia's labour market. A bank balance, laptop or company shareholding alone does not establish that work purpose.
Identify the actual overseas relationship
For an employee, identify the employer's legal entity, location, contract, duties and period. Explain how the work can be performed remotely. A group with several companies should show which entity employs the person and which makes payments rather than leaving unrelated names across the application documents.
Confirm the employer's actual agreement to the overseas arrangement. A policy permitting work from home in the existing country may not authorise working from Slovenia. Discuss the proposed location, period and practical restrictions, and use genuine employer evidence rather than an applicant's unauthorised statement on the company's behalf.
Explain contract work using the real counterparties
The definition also includes work under a civil-law contract for a business entity outside Slovenia. Identify the contracting party, where it is based, the work and the contract period. A portfolio or social-media page may show skills without establishing the particular contractual relationship being relied upon.
Where several contracts or payers are involved, connect them using the real records. Prospective clients and unsigned discussions should not be described as completed contracts. Preserve the original payment periods and currencies so that the work and means-of-support evidence can be assessed together without confusing their different purposes.
For overseas self-employment, show actual activity
The route includes a person working as self-employed abroad. Explain the registration, activity, service relationships and remote performance supported by the applicant's documents. Merely holding shares in a business or possessing a registration certificate does not show the person's actual working role.
Separate a continuing overseas business from plans to enter the Slovenian market. If the proposed activity involves local employment or a different purpose, disclose that plan and assess the appropriate permission. The government's explanation that the usual Employment Service consent is unnecessary for the defined digital nomad activity should not be expanded into unrestricted local work rights.
Add resources and the general documents
The monthly resources requirement is at least twice the relevant Slovenian average monthly net salary, using the applicable official-publication basis. Check the current reference rather than treating an old euro figure as permanent. The government permits proof through lawful sources; the actual source, period and availability still need supporting records.
The official document list also includes the form, photograph, passport, appropriate health insurance covering at least emergency medical services in Slovenia, and a criminal-record certificate from the home country. Company turnover should not automatically be presented as personal available resources. Financial evidence and qualifying work are separate checks.
Decide whether the temporary timetable suits the plan
The permit can be issued for up to one year and cannot be extended. The official guidance links the period to the employment or civil-law contract, subject to that maximum. A continuing business or renewed contract therefore should not be presented as an automatic annual residence renewal.
Family reunification can be considered immediately and the official specialist page permits simultaneous applications, but each family member needs their own eligibility and documents, with additional resources. Assess the actual passport, lawful location and submission route before travel. A short remote-work arrangement can suit a defined period; a household seeking continuous multi-year residence should examine the later legal basis at the outset.
