Slovenia Digital Nomad Permit Expiry: No Extension, Six-Month Reapplication Gap and a Different Residence Purpose

Slovenia's digital nomad temporary residence permit can be issued for up to one year and cannot be extended. A fresh application for the same digital nomad permit is possible six months after the previous permit expires. During the existing permit's validity, the government also allows an application for temporary residence on a different purpose, subject to that route's requirements.

Begin with the actual permission dates

Retain the decision and residence card and record the dates they actually establish. The maximum of one year is not a promise that every applicant receives precisely that period. The official guidance links the employment or civil-law contract to the period, within the maximum.

Put the work contract, passport, insurance and family documents alongside the residence timeline. A business continuing to trade or an employer offering another contract does not convert the digital nomad permit into a renewable annual arrangement. Address the residence question separately from the commercial continuation of the work.

Understand the fresh-application gap

The Ministry specifies six months after the expiry of the previous permit before reapplying for this digital nomad permission. Keep that reference point distinct from the day a renewal enquiry is sent, a person stops working or an adviser begins preparing a new file.

The gap does not itself grant permission to remain in Slovenia. Any stay or entry during that period needs its own lawful basis, assessed using the actual passport, documents and travel history. Do not describe a six-month waiting period as an extra six months automatically added to the original residence.

Review a different purpose while the permit is valid

The government explains that a person wishing to continue residing in Slovenia may apply during the digital nomad permit's validity for another temporary residence purpose. Local employment is one example in its explanation. The new route has its own eligibility and documents; the possibility of applying is not a guarantee of approval.

If local employment is intended, identify the actual employer, job and appropriate work-and-residence procedure. Do not assume the digital nomad exemption from the usual labour-market consent gives unrestricted local employment rights. A future plan to change purpose also does not authorise starting a different activity before the relevant rights exist.

Keep submission evidence distinct from an extension

An appointment, service payment or documents delivered to a representative should not be presented as a government extension. Keep the formal application receipt, any certificate and official correspondence, and assess their actual effect for the procedure being used. The rules for an initial lawful in-country digital nomad filing should not be copied automatically into every later application.

Travel and return to Slovenia require separate review using the person's current documents. A receipt useful for a particular domestic procedure is not necessarily an entry document for every border or a general European work authorisation. Check before relying on it to make a journey.

Coordinate the household and practical commitments

Family members have their own permissions, expiry dates and eligibility. Review them alongside the principal applicant's proposed next purpose rather than assuming a change covers everyone automatically. Children changing schools and partners ending employment should have a plan grounded in the actual status of their applications.

Housing, utilities, insurance and business obligations can continue beyond the permit's expiry. Check termination or change terms and the relevant address-registration steps when leaving or moving. Treat residence permission and tax obligations as separate questions requiring the appropriate assessment, without promising an automatic tax exemption from the digital nomad label.

An effective plan records three stages: the present authorised period, the lawful position after it ends, and any later application. Keep those dates and evidence current as work and family circumstances change. This avoids planning several years of continuous residence around a permission designed for a limited stay.
