Can Parent Boost holders work remotely? Overseas clients, local work and tax
Parent Boost is not a general New Zealand work visa. Overseas remote work may be allowed under visitor rules, but the answer depends on the employer or client, the actual activity, any need to be physically in New Zealand and the reward. A laptop, an online platform or payment into an overseas account does not by itself establish permission.
What counts as overseas remote work?
INZ describes remote work as activity for gain or reward for a company, employer or client that is not in New Zealand. Examples include answering emails and calls, coding and testing, writing reports, and meetings or presentations for colleagues outside New Zealand. Self-employed people and digital nomads can work remotely for clients outside New Zealand under the applicable rules.
The change covers visitor visa applications received from 27 January 2025. Check the actual granted visa and proposed activity rather than relying on somebody else's approval. Parent Boost remains a family visitor arrangement with its own health, insurance, sponsorship and stay conditions. Remote-work permission does not grant residence or remove those obligations.
The exclusions concern the substance of the work
Work for a New Zealand employer.
Work with a New Zealand business or person in exchange for goods or services, such as free accommodation for a review.
Work that requires the person to be in New Zealand.
Answering an overseas employer's emails differs from regularly managing staff or serving customers at a child's New Zealand shop. An offshore bank account does not change the recipient of the service. A multinational's overseas headquarters is also not a complete answer if the assignment requires the parent to attend a New Zealand worksite. Establish the actual arrangement before applying the remote-work exception.
Gain or reward includes benefits that can be valued in money, such as food, accommodation or services. A New Zealand hotel offering free nights in exchange for promotional content is not made irrelevant because there is no cash fee. Personal travel posts without a commercial exchange involve different facts. Do not label all photography or all online content as the same activity.
No remote-work hours cap does not extend the visa
INZ does not impose a general limit on the amount of qualifying overseas remote work under these visitor conditions. The holder must nevertheless comply with the visa and its expiry, and remain a genuine visitor. The rule does not authorise every local activity or remove Parent Boost's continuing requirements. If the plan becomes local employment or business activity, check the visa actually needed for it.
Assess an accompanying partner separately. One person's qualifying overseas assignment does not create local work rights for the other. List each person's employer or clients, services, reward and attendance requirements, alongside their own visa conditions. A shared family itinerary does not mean all activities or permissions are identical.
Immigration permission and tax are separate questions
INZ warns that working remotely for an overseas business or client while in New Zealand may create tax obligations. Offshore payroll or tax paid elsewhere does not automatically exempt a long visit. Actual presence, tax residence, income and applicable arrangements should be checked with Inland Revenue or an appropriate tax professional. A short-visit example should not be extended into a blanket exemption for years of Parent Boost stays.
If overseas earnings are also used for the visa's financial requirement, they must meet the chosen evidence route. Past income and continuity, or ownership and accessibility of personal bank funds, remain distinct tests. Expected future freelance orders are not automatically income already earned at application.
Before accepting a collaboration, identify the actual employer or client location, contractual service, reward and any New Zealand attendance. Obtain suitable advice on the real facts and secure any required work permission before starting the activity. Renaming an already agreed local service or changing its payment destination does not itself change what the person will be doing.
