Parent Boost application steps: offshore lodgement, insurance and first arrival

Apply for Parent Boost from outside New Zealand and remain outside New Zealand during the application. Start with eligibility, insurance feasibility and the evidence. Then submit the application and track the sponsors' forms. Approval in principle still leaves an insurance step before a visa is issued. An upload receipt, an application status and a granted eVisa are different records.

Before submitting: check feasibility and document timing

Research acceptable insurance and its likely cost before applying, but follow INZ's instruction to purchase after approval in principle. A general travel policy may not meet the required benefits or insurer rating. A quotation is neither final underwriting nor a decision that the applicant meets immigration health requirements. Resolve material uncertainty before making commitments based on a five-year visit.

Identify the parent, any included partner and each sponsor. Select the permitted financial evidence route and gather the corresponding records. Non-English documents require English translations and scans of the originals. The passport or travel document must remain valid for at least three months after the planned departure from New Zealand. Reconcile names, dates of birth and changes in family records before submitting.

Application submission does not complete sponsorship

  • 1. While offshore, use the official online account to submit the application, upload documents and pay the applicable fees.

  • 2. After INZ notifies the sponsor or sponsors, they log into their own accounts, complete their sponsorship forms and upload the required evidence.

  • 3. Monitor the application and official requests, responding by the stated deadlines and keeping submission receipts.

Sponsors supporting the visit through their income must provide the appropriate income evidence. The parent's successful submission does not automatically complete the sponsors' work. Where there are joint sponsors, track the required process for each person rather than assuming one completed form covers both. Use accurate contact details and arrange for official messages to be checked throughout the application.

Arrange medical examinations and chest X-rays according to the application process and INZ's requests, rather than booking prematurely. The process may require an eMedical reference, clinic details or the applicable certificates. Police certificates also have conditions and document-age requirements. Establish the likely lead time, then plan issuance so the evidence is suitable when submitted.

The insurance step has a three-month deadline

Approval in principle means the next step must be completed before INZ gives the applicant a visa. Provide evidence of acceptable insurance for the parent and any included partner, valid for at least 12 months. INZ states that the application will be declined if this step is not completed within three months of approval in principle. This is not a grace period starting after entry.

Check the issued policy's start date, benefits, limits, insurer rating and exclusions, even if an earlier quotation looked suitable. Keep the actual contract and submitted evidence. Changes in health, family arrangements or underwriting conditions need truthful handling; the deadline is not a reason to omit relevant information or submit evidence that does not match the insurance actually purchased.

After grant: read the eVisa before fixing travel

The current rule requires first arrival within six months of the date the visa is granted. The five-year stay begins on the first entry date. Record approval in principle, grant and first arrival separately. Check each person's identity, passport details and individual visa conditions. A programme description saying 'up to five years' does not replace the dates and conditions on the granted visa.

Complete applicable arrival declarations and entry preparations; a visa does not remove border requirements. After arrival, track sponsor residence, insurance renewals and the offshore health and insurance check. Detailed condition V4.35.5 requires the compliance form and fee to be submitted offshore after three years and no later than four years from the first arrival of whichever visa holder arrives first. Submit the required medical examination, chest X-ray and insurance evidence, then remain offshore until INZ confirms compliance. The visa webpage summarises this as a third-year check; use the detailed condition and each holder’s recorded dates to plan the precise deadline. Include that travel and waiting period in the family plan instead of treating the visa expiry date as the only future obligation.
