Panama Pensionado Eligibility: Lifetime Monthly Pension, Combined Spousal Pensions and Savings
Panama's Pensionado residence category normally requires a lifetime monthly pension of at least B/.1,000, with the relevant evidence from a foreign government, international organisation or private enterprise. A savings balance, one-off retirement withdrawal or expected investment return does not automatically replace that pension condition. Spousal combinations, dependants and the property exception have their own requirements.
Obtain a document explaining the pension right
The immigration checklist asks for certification of retired or pensioner status that establishes a lifetime pension at the required monthly amount or foreign-currency equivalent. Identify the paying institution, entitlement, amount and duration before organising a translated application.
If payments have not started or the arrangement ends after a fixed period, retain that description. Do not ask a translator to turn a limited entitlement into a lifetime one. A bank receipt can demonstrate payment, but does not always establish all legal terms of the underlying right.
Keep savings and lump sums separate
A large account balance can help explain a person's resources, but it is a different fact from the qualifying pension. Likewise, a one-off withdrawal from a retirement scheme is not automatically a lifetime monthly entitlement.
List available cash, actual recurring payments and future assumptions separately. Where the scheme has several benefit forms, identify which one the applicant actually holds. The route should be assessed on genuine institutional records rather than a private calculation that divides savings into a notional monthly payment.
Check whether spouses can combine pensions
The official checklist permits spouses to demonstrate the stated minimum through the sum of both pensions. Each pension must still have the appropriate supporting evidence. One spouse's missing document is not supplied by the other person's general bank balance.
Prepare a schedule showing the two institutions, monthly amounts, currencies and lifetime terms, together with the marriage evidence required for the application. Combined pension support and the additional requirements for dependants should be reviewed separately.
Treat the property exception as a conditional alternative threshold
The official documents describe a minimum pension of B/.750 where the applicant has acquired property personally in Panama for a sum greater than B/.100,000. The wording is greater than, rather than equal to, that property value.
This does not remove the pension condition. A company-held asset, a purchase intention or a property advertisement should not automatically be treated as the required personal acquisition. Confirm the actual ownership and supporting registry evidence before relying on the exception.
Prepare additional support for dependants
The checklist lists an additional B/.250 monthly economic capacity for each dependant, which can be supported by additional pension or a local bank reference. That item does not mean the principal pension can be replaced entirely with an overseas savings balance.
A child's permission also has a different framework from the pensioner's indefinite permission. Family relationships, age and study facts need individual review. Do not report the principal person's approval as permanent status already granted to everyone.
Use the actual document and currency requirements
Panama Digital states that foreign documents need the applicable apostille or authentication and that non-Spanish material must be translated by an authorised public translator under the stated Panamanian requirements. For foreign currency, the specified conversion into dollars must come from a competent entity.
Preserve the original amount, period and issuer behind any summary. Begin with the pension evidence and identify whether a document is missing or the entitlement itself is not established. More attachments, a higher fee or polished wording cannot create a qualifying pension or guarantee approval.
