German Opportunity Card Insurance: Why an Ordinary Travel Policy May Not Be Enough
For a German Opportunity Card, an ordinary short-trip travel policy will usually be insufficient. The Federal Foreign Office’s guidance dated 21 August 2026 requires private health insurance for the entire visa period, including outpatient and inpatient treatment rather than emergency-only cover. Obtain the actual policy and certificate before comparing them with the responsible mission’s current requirements.
Read the policy behind the Incoming label
The official Opportunity Card questions and answers refer to incoming health insurance. Providers may also use terms such as expat cover. A product name alone does not show that your intended stay is covered. Request the complete wording and check the insured person, territory, purpose, start date, end date and benefits. An advertisement or an intermediary’s quotation is not the policy itself.
An annual contract can still limit the length of each individual trip. A policy being valid for a year therefore does not necessarily cover a continuous year living abroad. Find the clauses defining a trip, residence and permitted activities. Describe your actual job-search plans to the insurer and retain its written response rather than assuming that a general holiday enquiry answers the same question.
Match the insurance dates to the intended visa period
Compare the intended entry and stay dates with the certificate. If the visa decision or departure changes, ask whether the insurance and its documentation need updating. Financial evidence, medical insurance and the period authorised by the immigration authority serve different purposes. Preparing one does not establish that the other requirements have been met.
Check how cover becomes effective. Payment, issue of a certificate, arrival in Germany and notification to the insurer may involve different steps. Record what has actually happened and retain confirmation. A plan to activate a policy after landing should not be confused with insurance already confirmed for the relevant period. Keep the final documents available before departure.
Compare benefits and exclusions, not only a headline limit
Read how the contract treats outpatient care, hospital treatment, claims, deductibles, waiting periods and exclusions. Tell the insurer truthfully about relevant ongoing treatment or other circumstances it asks about. Ask for a specific response where the wording is unclear. Payment of a premium does not establish that every expense will be reimbursed, and this article does not assess an individual product or medical need.
The German missions in China also warn that some travel policies exclude cover where a long-term stay is intended. Check the conditions applying to residence, job searching and paid activities. Do not describe yourself merely as a holidaymaker when seeking confirmation for an Opportunity Card stay; the response needs to address the facts you will actually rely on.
Confirm the transition when employment begins
Job searching, part-time work, a work trial and subsequent regular employment can involve different arrangements. Ask the employer and the relevant insurance institution whether and when new cover will apply. A signed contract, registration being prepared and effective membership are different stages. Clarify the transition before cancelling an existing policy or relying on a job that has not started.
Insurance and permission to work also need separate checks. An insurer accepting an activity does not establish that it is permitted by your residence title. Equally, an activity being allowed under immigration rules does not confirm that your policy covers it. Keep the written decisions and effective dates for both questions.
Keep a document record for each family member
Confirm each person’s residence arrangements and insurance individually. A policy issued to the main applicant does not become family cover simply because relatives intend to travel together. Ask the relevant institution about any proposed family membership, and keep premiums and possible out-of-pocket costs separate from the living-expense budget.
Before submission, identify the mission responsible for your application and retain its current checklist alongside the policy, certificate and important written responses. If older documents appear less demanding than current guidance, ask about the specific discrepancy rather than selecting the more convenient wording. The insurer confirms the contract’s cover; the visa authority assesses the evidence for the application. Preserve updated documents so an outdated certificate is not submitted by mistake.
