Can Children Attend a New Zealand State School While a Parent Studies for a Master’s?
A parent's New Zealand master's admission does not, by itself, give a child domestic-student status at a state school. Establish who can support the child's immigration application, which visa the child needs, and how the school will classify the child for fees. These decisions should be checked before committing to a school-year move.
Start with the actual qualification
Immigration New Zealand identifies specific circumstances in which a student parent can directly support a Dependent Child Student Visa. These include a PhD at a New Zealand university and the relevant government-approved exchange or Manaaki scholarship arrangements. A master's qualification should not be treated as equivalent to a university PhD simply because both involve postgraduate study.
Provide the formal offer and qualification details when seeking advice. General university admission material may describe academic opportunities without establishing the immigration options for each family member. Keep the course title, qualification level and any scholarship terms together so that the proposed family arrangement can be assessed against the correct category.
A partner's work visa can create a different route
INZ explains that where a student can support a partner's work visa but cannot directly support student visas for dependent children, the partner may instead be able to support the children's applications. The support then rests on the partner's appropriate work visa, rather than on the original student's admission alone.
This arrangement still requires the relevant partnership and child requirements to be met. It should not be advertised as an automatic benefit for every master's family. Record which parent is supporting each application and which decisions remain outstanding. A family can prepare documents together without assuming every member will receive a decision on the same day.
Separate the child's visa from school fee status
The Dependent Child Student Visa concerns eligible dependent children aged 19 or younger who intend to attend primary or secondary school. Dependence and the rules for older children need attention; a definition used for a residence application should not be copied into a temporary student application.
The child has an individual immigration application. Separately, the receiving school needs evidence to determine the applicable domestic or international fee classification under the current education rules, including the 2026 domestic-student notice. Merely choosing a state school does not answer the classification question. Ask for written confirmation based on the actual family documents rather than a general admissions reply.
Organise a transfer that can withstand delays
For a move from an overseas school, retain the child's genuine enrolment record, reports and subject information. Ask the receiving school about year placement and support needs. Different academic calendars or subject sequences can affect the practical transition even where immigration eligibility is straightforward.
Check names against passports and birth records before submitting information to two different systems. Explain genuine spelling or naming differences with appropriate documents. Do not alter an original school or civil record to make the application look more consistent. Follow the relevant translation requirements, and ask the receiving school what it needs for academic assessment.
Budget beyond the tuition category
Domestic-student classification does not remove every education-related household cost. Obtain information from the actual school about uniforms, equipment, transport and activities, distinguishing required payments from voluntary arrangements. Add realistic accommodation and childcare costs rather than relying on a headline claim that schooling is free.
The child's living-cost evidence and any relevant supporting-parent income provisions require their own review. Health-care eligibility is also separate from the school fee decision. Confirm how medical costs and insurance will be covered; a school placement is not evidence that all treatment will be publicly funded.
Keep the next education stage in view
INZ describes this dependent student category for primary and secondary education and directs tertiary study to the appropriate fee-paying student arrangements. Do not assume a child's secondary-school position will carry over unchanged into university admission, university fees or immigration permission. Older children need an earlier review of the next stage.
Before withdrawing from the current school, compare visa expiry dates, the receiving school's latest arrival date, deferral terms and housing commitments. Where another parent is not travelling, check the required custody and legal consent evidence. 卓越移民 Premiervisa Group can help organise the family's course and immigration records so that appropriately qualified advisers and the relevant institutions can assess the outstanding questions.
