Can a New Zealand Student's Partner Work? Eligible Courses, Living Together and NZD 4,200

Studying in New Zealand does not automatically give your partner permission to work. A Partner of a Student Work Visa depends on the student's eligible qualification and the partner's relationship, living arrangements, age, funds and other requirements. Not every bachelor's or diploma course qualifies. Do not build the family budget around employment that is neither authorised nor secured.

Identify the qualification branch, not just the course level

The current page covers Level 9 or 10 qualifications and specified Level 7 or 8 qualifications. The latter include qualifications specified as a requirement or registration qualification for a Green List role, applicable qualifications on the PSWV eligibility list, and a particular older-list arrangement where study began on or before 7 September 2022. Level 7 or 8 alone does not establish eligibility.

Obtain the formal qualification title, level, institution and study details, then identify the exact provision relied on. A course resembling a shortage occupation, a prestigious provider or high fees is not an approval. Future PSWV eligibility and support for a partner while studying are separate questions with their own requirements.

Marriage and living together need different evidence

Both partners must be at least 18 and living together in a genuine and stable relationship when applying. A marriage certificate helps establish the legal relationship but does not fully explain the shared home. INZ says relationship evidence used for this assessment must be from after both partners turned 18.

Prepare a truthful timeline of shared addresses, periods apart and their reasons, supported by appropriate housing, correspondence, shared financial or daily-responsibility evidence. The current student-partner page does not impose a universal twelve-month cohabitation rule on every applicant, so do not import a residence-category threshold without checking. Never backdate a tenancy or treat holiday photographs as a complete account of living together.

The partner's NZD 4,200 is not the whole family budget

The page requires at least NZD 4,200 for the applicant's maintenance and identifies financial evidence such as bank records. Student tuition, the student's own maintenance, children's costs and relocation remain separate. The amount is not a government fee or a promise that the whole household can live on it.

Check that the same balance is not allocated in full to tuition and every person's needs. A New Zealand job offer is not required for this application, but work permission is different from finding employment. Language, occupational registration, recruitment and actual pay need their own planning, including support while the partner is not earning.

Concurrent applications still have a dependency

You can apply at the same time as the student, but INZ says the partner's visa is granted only after the student's application is approved. The student must provide the applicable supporting form, while the partner independently meets relationship, health and character requirements. If the course or intake changes, update the relevant applications rather than assuming that notifying the institution updates INZ too.

The work visa is normally issued for the supporting student's visa duration, not automatically the entire advertised length of a multi-year degree. Read both approved eVisas for dates, work and travel conditions. While an application is pending, current valid permission governs work; a visitor does not gain work rights merely because the student is approved.

Children need their own immigration and education assessment

Dependent children cannot be included in this partner work visa application. INZ explains that a holder can support children for separate visas after obtaining the work visa, subject to requirements. Which permission, school-fee classification and enrolment arrangements apply must be checked for the child and supporting parent. A statement that family can accompany the student does not establish identical rights for everyone.

  • Obtain the student's formal course, qualification level and current or proposed visa details.

  • Organise genuine relationship and shared-home records from after both partners turned 18.

  • Check the partner's available funds, passport and individual health and character evidence.

  • List each child's age, status, school and separate application arrangements.

Track admission, student approval, partner permission, recruitment and school enrolment separately. 卓越移民 Premiervisa Group can organise assessment information within its agreed service scope, with formal immigration advice handled by an appropriately qualified practitioner. A course or service package cannot replace the individual requirements or government decisions.
