New Zealand Student Visa Funds: What the NZD 20,000 Annual Living Requirement Does Not Cover

For tertiary study lasting a year or more, New Zealand's Fee Paying Student Visa requires NZD 20,000 per year for living costs, with tuition and outward travel addressed separately. This is evidence of maintenance, not a fee paid to the government or an all-inclusive price for education and a family move. This article uses a year of tertiary study as its example; school-age and shorter-course requirements need their own calculation.

Give each amount one purpose

Budget item

What to establish

Maintenance

The applicable annual living-funds requirement and genuinely available support

Tuition

The provider's fees, what has been paid and what remains outstanding

Outward travel

A paid ticket or other acceptable evidence, additional to maintenance funds

Practical relocation costs

Your own estimate for deposits, transport, equipment and personal needs

Start with the balance still available after payments already made. The same money cannot simultaneously cover all outstanding tuition, a full year of living costs and an outward ticket. If the family holds several accounts or currencies, retain the account holder, original currency and access details. A converted total alone can hide restrictions or double counting.

A bank balance is only part of the evidence

The operational instructions require funds from a genuine source that are genuinely available for the student's maintenance. Statements, fixed deposits and other appropriate evidence should explain whose money it is, how it arose, whether access is restricted and how the student can use it in New Zealand. Evidence of income and evidence of available savings answer different questions.

For a recent large deposit, preserve the records that explain its actual source, such as accumulated earnings, a matured deposit or a documented asset sale. These are examples of evidence organisation, not a universal checklist. Money borrowed briefly for display or otherwise unavailable for study should not be represented as unrestricted personal savings.

Prepaid living expenses need a clear receipt

U3.20 allows for prepaid living expenses in the maintenance calculation. If accommodation or another applicable cost has already been paid, obtain a formal receipt identifying its purpose and covered period, then check the treatment with your adviser. An unpaid booking, an estimate of future rent or an unexplained deposit is not equivalent to evidence that a year's maintenance has been provided.

Actual costs also depend on the city, accommodation, transport and personal needs. The immigration amount is not a promise that every student can live comfortably on it. A partner and children need their own assessment of immigration status and expenditure; the student's individual figure should not be treated as a complete family budget.

Family funding and formal sponsorship use different evidence

Genuine funds held by or on behalf of the student, formal sponsorship and a Financial Undertaking for a Student are distinct ways of evidencing support. A parent's willingness to pay does not mean that a general letter completes every requirement. Identify the route being used, then supply the appropriate relationship, financial and form or online evidence.

Further onshore student applications carry restrictions concerning formal sponsorship and the original sponsorship arrangement. Do not assume that a wealthier friend can simply replace the previous sponsor. Your current location and earlier application records are relevant alongside the proposed supporter's finances.

Explain later years without inventing current assets

INZ says a credible plan for subsequent tuition and living costs can strengthen a multi-year study application. All future years' money does not necessarily need to be available now, but the plan should connect to genuine family income, savings and other support. Money already spent should not reappear as an existing asset in each later year's budget.

Expected casual work or a hoped-for graduate salary should not be used to conceal a gap in funds that must be evidenced now. Permission to work, finding a suitable job and earning a particular amount are separate matters. Obtain the course charges and accommodation information, build a workable budget and retain the supporting bank and payment records before committing to tuition and travel.
