SMC registration points: scope, provisional status and the work-experience start date

SMC registration points follow the exact body, item and conditions listed in SR 3.30. Longer personal service does not automatically award six points. Similar titles or different scopes under the same authority may receive different scores. Establish the actual qualification rather than treating a similarly named overseas credential as automatically equivalent.

Match the authority, name and scope

Supply the registration or licensing body, complete name and scope of practice, with evidence of any extra table requirements. Membership, registration, a practising certificate and certification are not interchangeable just because one card is available. Preserve the original terminology rather than translating an item into a more favourable scope.

Current listed example

Points and requirement direction

Registered Nurse

Three, with the corresponding Nursing Council registration

Nursing Practitioner

Six, under the corresponding registration entry

Registered Teacher

Five, with registration and a Full 1 or Full 2 practising certificate

These illustrate differences between entries, not an advance points award for every nurse or teacher. Years as a Registered Nurse do not change the registration's name into a higher-scoring scope. A teacher must also address the specified practising certificate rather than assume any temporary document satisfies Full 1 or Full 2.

Provisional status needs the rule and its exceptions

SR 3.25.20 generally excludes provisional, trainee, intern and limited registrations, licences, certifications or scopes unless the table specifies otherwise. The word 'registered' alone does not settle the issue. Establish the purpose of the actual document and any further process with its issuer.

Some medical entries expressly include specified provisional scopes or an eligibility-letter provision, so it is also wrong to reject every provisional registration universally. A listed exception applies to that item, not automatically to every occupation. Use the person's precise scope and official evidence.

Personal experience is not the registration score

The table, not a private conversion of service years, determines registration points. Choose one skill category—registration, qualification or income—and add eligible New Zealand experience only where required. The three skill scores cannot all be stacked. A long career does not privately turn a listed three-point credential into six.

For work-experience points used with registration, SR 3.25.25 requires the relevant New Zealand experience to be completed after obtaining that registration, licence or certification. Earlier work in a similarly named role should not be counted wholesale without the timing assessment. Keep the actual qualification date, employment, pay and supporting evidence together.

Registration and work permission are different results

A recognised credential does not itself grant a work visa or replace eligible work or an offer, employer and pay requirements. Conversely, an employer willing to hire does not remove professional-registration obligations. Establish each actual permission instead of treating completion of one as completion of every prerequisite to activity.

Renewals, changed scopes and new employment should be assessed against the real EOI and subsequent requirements. Six-point skill claims with contracts for services also have specific local-experience conditions. It is unsafe to advertise every six-point registration as immediate residence eligibility. Check the invitation and policy transition where applicable.

For assessment, identify the body, exact qualification, scope, award and expiry dates and genuine employment background. Mark exams or decisions still pending. Locate the official entry before identifying missing evidence; a private adviser should not promise six points or residence without reviewing the actual record. Document organisation and the government's finding remain separate outcomes.
