SMC family medicals: children's checks, earlier records and application timing

SMC medical preparation is not one identical package for every family member. The current visa page requires a medical examination and chest X-ray for people aged 15 or older. Children aged 11 to 14 also need both, with blood tests only if requested by INZ or the panel physician. Children aged 10 or younger need a medical examination but generally no chest X-ray unless requested. Previous evidence and document timing also matter.

Locate earlier immigration medical records first

The SMC guidance says certificates already provided to INZ and issued within the last three years may not need to be provided again. An ordinary employer health check is not automatically an immigration medical, and remembering an earlier examination is not enough to establish the record. Find the reference, date, clinic and previous submission details.

The next step may involve supplementary evidence, a particular test or a new examination. Check the current requirement before booking the entire family again. Do not relabel an old report as current. INZ may still request updated evidence or further examination when the circumstances require it.

Coordinate new evidence with actual lodgement

The SMC page requires new medical evidence to be less than three months old at submission. Booking, attendance, follow-up tests and completion can occur on different dates. Coordinate with the other application documents rather than assuming that an earlier appointment is always better.

Keep separate progress for each person: booked, awaiting examination, awaiting results and submitted. Further tests may change the timetable, so the first appointment does not necessarily mark completion. A family payment also does not mean every individual's evidence has reached the same stage.

Use an approved panel arrangement

Required examinations and X-rays must use the INZ panel physician or radiology arrangements unless there are no panel physicians in the country, when the official registered-doctor procedure applies. Confirm the clinic through the official list and explain that the examination is for SMC residence. General health-screening advertisements do not establish panel status.

Ask the actual clinic about examination, X-ray, laboratory and possible additional charges. Keep medical costs separate from government application fees and professional service charges. Paying for a check purchases a medical service, rather than a promise that INZ will accept the health requirement or grant residence.

Let appropriate clinicians manage medical questions

Tell the clinic accurately about pregnancy, ongoing treatment, medication and other relevant circumstances. Do not stop treatment or conceal a history to meet an application date. Which examinations are appropriate and how results should be interpreted are clinical questions for suitable medical professionals.

Pregnancy has separate official X-ray arrangements; confirm them with the clinic rather than applying the general age outline alone. The age outline is preparation information, not an individual instruction to undertake a test. If further evidence is requested, establish the precise item, issuer and deadline. An additional examination does not by itself mean refusal, and a private organisation cannot guarantee that every health issue will be accepted.

An eMedical reference is not a health approval

Where eMedical is used, the clinic provides the appropriate reference so INZ can access the information. The SMC page also identifies relevant clinic details or certificate evidence. A reference links records; it does not establish that the government has completed or accepted its health assessment. Clinic transmission, INZ receipt and formal assessment are separate stages.

Retain your own records through the clinic's proper process. Have an incorrect name or reference corrected by the issuer rather than editing a scan. Share medical information only with an appropriate confirmed recipient, and avoid posting full references or reports in public comments.

A per-person checklist of birth dates, previous records, required items, clinic and remaining action helps coordinate the family with actual lodgement. The objective is accurate, timely evidence for each person. Reaching one shared appointment date is less useful than knowing what has genuinely been completed and what still requires professional review.
