Is Every New Zealand Post-Study Work Visa Three Years? Master's, PGDip and Bachelor's Qualifications
A New Zealand Post-Study Work Visa is not automatically valid for three years. Under current instructions, an eligible master's or doctoral qualification studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks can support a three-year visa. A bachelor's degree or Level 8 qualification instead uses the relevant study duration confirmed by the education provider. Check eligibility and duration separately before relying on a course advertisement's maximum figure.
A postgraduate diploma is not a master's degree
A Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma, or PGDip, and a Level 9 master's degree are different qualifications. Describing both as postgraduate study does not give them the same PSWV duration. Ask the provider for the exact qualification title, level, normal full-time schedule and your own proposed study arrangements. These details are more useful than a general statement that graduates may obtain up to three years.
If you plan to move from a PGDip into a master's programme, establish the master's qualifying study in its own right. WD3.1 includes examination preparation in study weeks but excludes holidays, time repeating failed components and study towards a different qualification whose credits are transferred. Do not simply combine all earlier study, transferred credits and time living in New Zealand to reach 30 weeks.
Match the qualification to the duration provision
Qualification | Current duration basis to check |
Level 9 or 10 master's or doctorate | At least 30 weeks of full-time New Zealand study; three years if the requirements are met |
Level 7 bachelor's degree or Level 8 qualification | At least 30 weeks; relevant study duration confirmed by the provider |
Listed non-degree qualification at Levels 4 to 7 | The required full study duration in New Zealand; relevant study duration determines the visa period |
Bachelor's immediately followed by honours or a PGDip | Qualifying consecutive study may be combined, subject to the conditions and a three-year maximum |
The table is a way to identify the applicable provision, rather than an individual approval. Non-degree qualifications must meet the eligible-list requirements and can carry occupation-related work restrictions. Similar visa lengths do not necessarily mean the same work rights. Check both the qualification instructions and the conditions ultimately recorded on your eVisa.
Repeating a course does not automatically buy more work time
WD3.5 uses study duration determined by the provider through the offer of place or a confirmation letter. It excludes extra time spent repeating failed components. An immigration officer may ask for further evidence if actual study differs from the expected qualification length. Counting every day between first arrival and graduation can therefore produce an incorrect estimate.
If your studies are interrupted, preserve the genuine academic record, changes to enrolment and correspondence with the institution. Deal with academic progress and current student visa conditions first. Deliberately extending study is not an established way to obtain a longer PSWV, and a provider should not be asked to describe repeat study as ordinary course duration.
Consecutive study and an earlier PSWV need separate attention
An eligible first qualification immediately followed by a higher qualification that does not meet the usual eligibility requirements can fall within a specific consecutive-study application provision. That does not make a short master's programme eligible for three years in its own right. The qualification used as the application basis affects both timing and duration, so check it before accepting credit exemptions or another offer.
Current eligibility also requires that the applicant has not previously been granted a PSWV. A later, higher qualification does not automatically create a second entitlement. Provide your complete visa history when assessing a new course rather than asking only what graduates from that programme usually receive.
Do not generalise a specific exception
WD3.5.5 provides additional time in specified non-degree qualification cases where work experience is needed for Teaching Council registration or relevant New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors membership. The additional period is limited, and total PSWV duration cannot exceed three years. It is not a general extension for every regulated profession.
The Graduate Diploma eligibility expansion scheduled for 16 November 2026 has its own conditions and is not a universal three-year option. Obtain the actual course facts and the reason for any proposed visa-duration estimate before committing to tuition and relocation. After approval, use your own eVisa to plan work and travel. Neither the qualification nor the work visa guarantees a job or residence.
