New Zealand PSWV Deadlines: When the Three, Six and Twelve-Month Application Windows Apply

3 min read

A New Zealand Post-Study Work Visa application normally must be lodged no later than three months after the relevant student visa ends. Doctoral qualifications have a six-month provision, while particular consecutive-study situations have separate three-month or twelve-month arrangements. The graduation ceremony is not the usual starting point. If you are in New Zealand, you must also maintain a valid visa: an application window does not extend permission to stay or work.

Put the visa and academic dates on separate lines

Collect your student eVisa, offer of place, academic transcript and completion evidence. Record the qualification title, completion date and student visa end date separately. A normal application requires successful completion of the eligible qualification used for the application. INZ identifies a qualification document, a provider's completion letter or an academic transcript as possible evidence. If the course is complete but the ceremony is later, ask the institution which formal evidence it can issue now.

Do not describe expected completion as a completed qualification. If you still have academic requirements outstanding, address your studies and current immigration permission first. Doctoral students have a specific provision allowing evidence that their thesis has been submitted for examination. That is not a general early-application option for every master's or postgraduate course.

Identify the provision before calculating a deadline

Situation

Window under WD3.1

Ordinary eligible qualification

No later than three months after the relevant student visa end date

Doctoral qualification

No later than six months after the student visa end date

Bachelor's immediately followed by honours or a PGDip

Subject to the consecutive-study conditions, within three months of the student visa end date for the second qualification

Eligible first qualification immediately followed by a higher qualification that does not meet the usual requirements

Subject to consecutive visas and the other conditions, within twelve months of the first qualification's student visa end date

The twelve-month provision is not an extension available to anyone who changes courses. It requires completion of an eligible initial qualification immediately followed by completion of a higher qualification that does not meet the ordinary eligibility requirements, with consecutive student visas or interim visas carrying study conditions. The qualification used as the application basis remains important. A short later master's does not automatically produce a three-year master's-based visa.

The bachelor's-to-honours or PGDip provision also needs the specified course sequence and visa continuity. If your history includes a study break, a different immigration status, offshore study or transferred credits, supply a complete timeline for assessment. Possessing two certificates does not establish all the required conditions.

The filing window does not keep you lawful in New Zealand

Someone may still be within a PSWV filing window after their student visa ends, but this does not allow them to remain in New Zealand without a valid visa. INZ expressly requires valid immigration permission at all times while you are in the country. Check the appropriate application and subsequent status before your current permission expires, rather than marking only the outer PSWV deadline on a calendar.

If an Interim Visa is issued while an application is assessed, read its actual work, study and travel conditions. A pending application is not an approved PSWV. Do not start full-time work or self-employment simply because those activities may be permitted by the visa you hope to receive. Travel plans also need to be checked against your current permission and the applicable application arrangements.

Schedule the documents alongside the dates

  • Ask when the provider can issue completion evidence or doctoral thesis-submission confirmation.

  • Match passport details, qualification names and consecutive visa and enrolment records.

  • Prepare evidence of at least NZD 5,000 available for maintenance, separately from application fees and personal costs.

  • Check medical, police-certificate and translation requirements for your circumstances, including document validity.

Document validity and the application window are different timelines. Waiting for a certificate does not automatically move the filing deadline, while obtaining a time-limited document too early may make it unusable later. Raise difficulties promptly and follow the applicable requirements; do not backdate records or claim that an outstanding result has already been obtained.

Previous PSWV grants also matter because current instructions do not provide a new entitlement simply for obtaining a higher qualification. Keep the full submitted application, filing confirmation and any requests for further information. After approval, check the eVisa's dates and conditions. A successful submission and permission to work are separate outcomes.
