Parent Boost Health and Insurance Check: The Window After Year Three
Research suitable Parent Boost insurance and its real cost before applying, then buy cover at the appropriate approval-in-principle stage under INZ's process. An ordinary travel policy may not meet the requirements. An insurer accepting the parent is also different from the parent satisfying immigration health requirements. Establish both before committing to a long-term visiting arrangement.
Compare each required benefit
Required benefit | Current minimum in NZD or equivalent |
Emergency medical care | 250,000 each year, including the relevant diagnosis, treatment, ambulance and hospital care |
Cancer care | 100,000 each year, checking the required diagnosis and treatment scope |
Repatriation for serious illness or disability | 250,000 |
Return of remains | 50,000 |
A high overall limit does not prove that every required benefit is included. Obtain the policy version, coverage period, limits and exclusions, and request written clarification of unclear definitions. The insurer must also have at least an A strong credit rating or an equivalent internationally recognised rating. A brand having appeared among official examples is not approval of every policy it sells.
Disclose the health information the insurer requires and ask about pre-existing conditions, waiting periods, excesses, renewal and notification of changes. A quotation is not final acceptance, and payment does not guarantee every claim. Budget separately for genuine care, transport and family assistance. The article does not recommend a product or assess an individual's medical eligibility.
Insurance and immigration health are separate assessments
INZ says the Parent Boost acceptable health standard is higher than for other visitor visas and that applicants are not eligible for a medical waiver. The formal process determines the individual's position. Do not use the insurer's willingness to take a premium as evidence that immigration health is resolved.
Follow the required medical and chest-X-ray arrangements. The official guidance states the relevant evidence must be less than three months old when received. Completing examinations too early can create another timing problem. An included partner needs their own requirements and insurance checked rather than being assumed covered by the main applicant's documents.
Retain continuing cover evidence
Acceptable cover is required for the first year and while in New Zealand on the visa. Check renewed or replacement policies rather than assuming a familiar name means unchanged benefits. Preserve effective dates, expiry, policy terms and actual travel periods so the family can demonstrate the history when asked.
If renewal becomes difficult or terms change, seek appropriate advice promptly. A later policy should not be assumed to repair a previous gap. Keep prepared, submitted and accepted evidence as different states. Approval in principle still requires a further step before the visa itself is granted.
Plan the offshore check after year three
The visa webpage describes the check broadly as taking place in the third year. The detailed condition V4.35.5 says to submit the compliance form and fee offshore after three years and no later than four years from the first arrival of whichever visa holder arrives first. The holder and included partner must provide a medical examination and chest X-ray completed by an offshore panel physician and issued less than three months before submission, plus evidence of acceptable insurance for previous periods in New Zealand. Use the first-arrival date of the earliest arriving holder; the webpage summary is less precise than the detailed condition.
Provide the required medical evidence and proof of acceptable insurance for the relevant periods. The holders must stay offshore until INZ confirms the visa conditions have been met; the official page says this could take up to three months. Do not book a short return trip on the assumption that attending a clinic immediately authorises re-entry.
Allow for offshore accommodation, travel, examinations and care. Follow the actual official submission instructions and fees available at the time rather than inventing a form not yet published. Parent Boost remains a temporary visitor visa. Insurance purchase and a completed check are not automatic steps to permanent residence.
