Can Parents or Siblings Join Your AIP Application? Declaring Family Is Different From Including Them
An AIP application can include a qualifying partner and dependent children. Parents and siblings cannot join it merely because they are close relatives, share a home or run the family company. The person paying the investment does not determine how widely the family-member rules extend. Define each person's intended status before treating an investment as a whole-family solution.
Why does the form ask about other relatives?
INZ's application help includes an Other family members section requiring relevant parent, sibling and other family details. This disclosure is different from including someone as an applicant. A name entered into the family background does not establish a visa application, fee payment or residence permission for that person.
Prepare a family schedule with age, relationship, current location, work or study, intended length of stay and timing. A couple with children has different questions from a couple planning to move with parents and an adult sibling. A single headcount is not enough to quote or assess those arrangements accurately.
For each person, label whether the proposal is AIP inclusion, a separate route to investigate, a temporary visit or no assessed option yet. This is a working record rather than a substitute for official eligibility. It prevents a large family-information sheet being presented as proof that every listed person has a residence route.
Included partners and children still have requirements
A partner needs evidence supporting the applicable relationship requirements; a marriage certificate does not establish every relevant fact. A child aged 24 or younger must still meet the dependent-child definition. The official form specifically addresses single status, children of their own and financial dependence for the relevant age groups, including additional dependency evidence for ages 21 to 24.
Use the real employment, income and relationship history. Do not create apparent dependence by hiding a child's work or manufacturing last-minute transfers. If a requirement or document is uncertain, identify it for review. Family inclusion is an assessment question, not an entitlement purchased by offering more money.
Keep each person's documents and outcome separately. A later child or changed circumstance requires the appropriate procedure. Inclusion also does not mean that everyone will obtain citizenship or any later permanent-residence outcome on the same date. A household timetable should show those individual stages.
Assess parents and adult siblings before committing
A parent seeking long-term residence has a different objective from a parent visiting temporarily. Any relevant parental route has its own sponsorship, residence, income, health, insurance or other requirements. A child's new AIP status should not be assumed to satisfy them immediately. A parent's own assets do not create an extra place on the AIP application.
An adult sibling needs an assessment using their actual qualifications, occupation, language, work opportunity, funds or other relevant circumstances. If no route has yet been identified, keep that status explicit. Where the sibling's move is essential to the family's decision, complete the separate assessment before one person commits capital that may be difficult to release.
Budget separately for each proposed application and for genuine visits, care, housing and medical or insurance needs. Obtain actual terms rather than borrowing another family's cost estimate. A temporary visiting arrangement should not be recorded as long-term residence solved, and a general discussion is not a confirmed alternative.
Ask the service provider to identify the scope, proposed assessment, outstanding conditions and next step for each person. Supply sensitive originals only through appropriate channels. Families can plan together while their qualifications and government decisions remain individual. An accurate inclusion boundary helps determine whether AIP fits the household's real objectives.
