Changing an AIP Application Between Growth and Balanced: The One-Change Window

Immigration New Zealand allows a change between the Active Investor Plus Growth and Balanced categories only once. The change must be made before approval in principle or within the first six months after approval in principle. Adding money to a bank account, receiving a new product recommendation or asking a coordinator to update a spreadsheet does not establish that the application category has changed.

First identify the decision you actually want to make. Replacing an acceptable investment while retaining the same category is an investment-management question. Moving to a different category changes the requirements being used for the application. A product acceptable only under another category cannot be treated as suitable for the existing category merely because the funds remain in New Zealand.

Recover the dates and previous decisions

Use the actual approval-in-principle letter to establish the window. Do not count from opening an account, meeting a fund manager or deciding when to relocate. Keep the original category, any previous change and the current funding and investment position on one record. A change of adviser does not reset an earlier category change.

If the original transfer period is approaching its end, seek specific advice promptly. Do not wait until every commercial detail is settled before checking whether a change remains available. A separate request for more time to transfer funds should not be assumed to extend the category-change window without an applicable official basis.

Additional funding must be supported

Growth requires a minimum NZD 5 million investment and Balanced a minimum NZD 10 million. For a Growth application already approved in principle, INZ's transfer guidance describes contacting it within the initial six-month transfer period and providing additional nominated funds or asset evidence within that period when seeking Balanced instead. The additional funding must be owned and legally acquired.

Prepare an index separating original nominated funding, additional assets, exchange-rate differences and the actual transfer trail. Do not count the same asset twice or assume an unrelated person's payment is acceptable because it closes the numerical gap. Banking, source-jurisdiction and immigration requirements all need consideration before funds move.

A lending or family arrangement has its own facts and requirements. Ask the appropriate professionals to identify what evidence establishes ownership and lawful acquisition. A sufficient destination balance is only one observation; it does not explain who owns the money or how it reached the account.

Compare the full obligations, not just the minimum

The Growth investment period is 36 months and the Balanced period 60 months. The acceptable investment scope and presence requirements also differ. Compare the capital the household can genuinely commit, liquidity, risk understanding and travel capacity. A higher minimum is not a government guarantee of safety, and a shorter immigration period is not a promise that a particular product can be redeemed on demand.

If money is already invested, review the contract, exit terms and continuing immigration obligations before redeeming anything. Moving first and explaining later can create an avoidable gap. Investment advice and immigration assessment should remain coordinated while each professional makes clear what they are confirming.

Retain the actual outcome of the request

Contact INZ through its current official instructions, identify the application and explain the proposed change and supporting funding. Keep the correspondence and any additional requirements. A message sent, a request for further information and a confirmed change are separate stages. A private adviser saying a change may be explored is not the decision itself.

Once the actual position is confirmed, align the funding, investment and household schedules with it. Preserve unresolved items with a responsible person and next action rather than describing them as complete. The single change should support an informed decision, not substitute for comparing categories before committing to a commercial arrangement.
