Italy Digital Nomad Application Steps: Visa, No Prior Work Clearance and Eight Working Days to Apply at Questura

Italy's digital nomad and remote-worker route removes the specified prior work-clearance requirement, but it does not remove the visa and residence procedures. The decree requires the residence application directly to the Questura of the province where the applicant is located within eight working days of entering Italy. An appointment or a prepared file is not the completed residence permission.

Start with the category and real activity

Identify the actual self-employment, employment or relevant collaboration arrangement. The activity must be highly qualified and performed remotely using technology. The employer or client may be in Italy or abroad; this route should not be described using another country's overseas-work-only definition.

Assess the professional qualification basis and the separate minimum of six months of previous relevant activity. A job title, company shareholding or bank balance does not replace those conditions. Organise the contract, duties, periods and supporting evidence before committing to a travel timetable.

Understand what the clearance exemption changes

The decree specifies that the usual prior nulla osta described for the relevant digital nomad and remote-worker cases is not required. The route also sits outside the ordinary annual entry quota arrangements for the relevant longer stays. Neither feature guarantees approval or eliminates the remaining documentary requirements.

Do not assume that tourist visa exemption is equivalent to authorisation for the proposed professional activity. The decree also addresses the necessary visa and residence process for the specified shorter stays. Establish the actual passport, purpose and procedure rather than importing ordinary tourism rules into a work plan.

Apply through the responsible consular procedure

The national government explanation places the first visa stage at the Italian consulate or embassy in the applicant's country of residence. Use the correct office and current checklist for the person's lawful residence. Do not invent a different address to obtain a more convenient checklist or appointment.

Prepare the professional and experience evidence, lawful annual income, accommodation and medical and hospital insurance. For remote workers, include the relevant contract or binding offer and remuneration evidence. Obtain any applicable employer-signed declaration through the real responsible person; the applicant cannot simply sign an employer's statement without authority.

Retain the approved visa and endorsed file

A service provider's acknowledgement, fee payment or appointment confirmation should not be recorded as visa approval. Keep the formal result and read its actual dates and conditions. Arrange travel using the real issued documents rather than assuming a proposed departure date is secured.

The decree says the applicant must show the documents presented for the visa, endorsed by the diplomatic or consular office, in support of the residence application. Keep that complete file accessible after travel. Documents held elsewhere or a partial personal summary may not answer the post-entry requirement.

Act on the actual entry date

Apply directly at the competent provincial Questura within eight working days after entry. Preserve the actual entry evidence and confirm the local submission arrangements promptly. The period is expressed in working days, not an invitation to replace the actual entry event with the date an adviser notices the file.

The national government explanation discusses starting the relevant activity following the residence application and resulting official receipt. Assess the person's actual lawful procedural position; a private upload, tourist arrival or consultant's internal status is not that official receipt. Travel or other activities need review using the scope of the actual documents.

The permit can be issued for up to one year and renewed annually if its conditions continue. Track the decision, card, current work, insurance and later compliance separately. Family arrangements, tax and social-security responsibilities require their own assessment rather than being assumed complete because the visa was issued.
