Italy Digital Nomad Renewal: Current Work, Income, Partita IVA and Tax and Social-Security Compliance
Italy's digital nomad and remote-worker residence permit can be issued for up to one year and renewed annually if the conditions that supported it continue. Renewal is a fresh check of the current position, not automatic permanent residence. Tax and social-security compliance can also affect the permission; receiving money from abroad does not remove those questions.
Review the work that exists now
Update the employer or client, contract, duties and remote-working arrangement. If a contract ended or the person changed work, retain the real dates and replacement evidence. A confirmation used for the first application should not continue to describe an activity that no longer exists.
The national government explanation does not impose a general prohibition on changing employers. A change nevertheless needs to be assessed against the route's continuing requirements. Do not treat any new job as automatically suitable, or assume that the ability to use a computer establishes the required professional level and remote activity.
Refresh income, accommodation and insurance
Check the applicable lawful annual-income basis and, for remote workers, the remuneration requirements relevant to the actual contract. Retain the current original financial records. A remaining bank balance does not independently prove every income and work condition where the underlying activity has ended.
Keep accommodation and medical and hospital insurance aligned with the actual continuing stay. Read the policy period, territory and relevant limits instead of assuming the first year's payment also covers the next year. Housing or family changes should be reflected in genuine current documents rather than concealed to preserve the appearance of the first application.
Distinguish Codice fiscale and Partita IVA
Article 6 of the decree provides for generation and communication of the codice fiscale through the Questura at the residence-permit stage. It separately requires digital nomads in the self-employed category to request a partita IVA. These identifiers have different functions; receiving one should not be described as completion of every tax procedure.
The national government explanation says the partita IVA does not open automatically when the permit is issued and discusses applying through the Revenue Agency or an intermediary. Obtain advice appropriate to the real self-employed activity and records. A remote employee should not automatically be given the same instructions solely because both categories work online.
Assess social security separately from private cover
The decree provides for checks by INPS and INAIL. Applicable bilateral social-security agreements may determine treatment for a person subject to a third country's system. In the absence of such an agreement, the decree refers to the Italian social-security and insurance framework for the relevant period.
Do not assume that contributions already paid abroad or a private health policy satisfy every Italian obligation. Medical insurance for the immigration file and social-security treatment are different matters. The actual work, jurisdictions and any applicable agreement need assessment before promising an exemption or a particular contribution outcome.
Keep tax compliance grounded in the real circumstances
The decree provides for communication with the Revenue Agency and for notification of established tax violations to the Questura. It also addresses revocation where the relevant tax and contribution provisions are not respected. Treat those responsibilities as part of maintaining the permission, rather than as an optional issue after the card arrives.
Avoid presenting an overseas payer or a simple day count as a complete individual tax-residence answer. Income type, activity and applicable tax rules require appropriate assessment. Retain genuine invoices, remuneration and filing records; a residence adviser should not invent a tax result or rewrite a transaction to make a renewal appear easier.
Plan travel, family permissions and the actual renewal process alongside the current expiry date. Payment for professional help or an appointment does not itself extend residence. An organised renewal file explains the current eligibility and compliance evidence, with separate records of submission and the government's decision.
