Italy Digital Nomad Qualifications: Higher Education, Professional Experience and the Separate Six-Month Requirement

Italy's digital nomad and remote-worker framework concerns highly qualified activity. It also requires at least six months of previous experience in the activity to be performed. Those are separate requirements: six months of work does not automatically replace the relevant higher qualification or professional-experience basis.

Classify the actual work first

The decree distinguishes a self-employed digital nomad from a remote worker in employment or the specified collaboration arrangements. Identify the real contract, duties and working structure. A freelance label on a profile or ownership of a company does not determine every legal classification.

Italy should not be treated as identical to digital nomad programmes that categorically require every employer to be overseas. Its framework can involve an employer or client in Italy or abroad, while still requiring the relevant highly qualified activity performed remotely. Establish the particular arrangement rather than applying another country's definition.

For education, show the level and actual course

The official consular guidance describes the higher-education and recognised post-secondary professional qualification directions. Organise the formal award, institution, level and course duration, and determine the appropriate recognition or comparability evidence for the place where it was obtained.

A translated certificate is not automatically a complete recognition assessment. The London guidance refers to Declaration of Value or CIMEA evidence for the qualifications within its instructions and directs applicants to the competent authorities for the issuing location. Do not assume a degree from any institution is accepted merely because its English title contains bachelor or master.

Regulated professions need their own assessment

For a regulated profession, the official guidance describes certification from the competent Italian authority under the relevant legislation. A licence from the applicant's home jurisdiction does not prove that every Italian professional requirement is already satisfied.

Identify the actual work and competent professional body before relying on a licence. Obtain the relevant evidence at the stage required by the applicable procedure. A visa application should not describe a pending recognition request as a completed professional authorisation.

Experience alternatives require more than elapsed time

The five-year professional-experience direction concerns experience at a level comparable to the relevant tertiary qualification and connected to the profession or sector. Organise duties, employers, periods and genuine supporting contracts or remuneration records. Five calendar years in unrelated or insufficiently specialised work should not be treated as an automatic qualification.

The more specific ICT direction concerns relevant experience of at least three years within the preceding seven years for the listed managers or specialists in ISCO-08 groups 133 and 25. It does not cover every role involving a computer. Review the actual functions and evidence instead of altering a job title to appear to fit the classification.

Document the six months separately

The decree additionally requires previous experience of at least six months in the activity to be undertaken. The national government explanation discusses prior contracts for remote workers and relevant assignments, services or invoices for self-employed digital nomads. Use records that show the real activity and duration.

Keep the qualification basis and this activity timeline as two clear parts of the file. The same document may support more than one fact, but the assessment still needs to answer both questions. Do not promise that a short remote contract settles a separate degree, regulated-profession or multi-year experience requirement.

Income, accommodation and medical and hospital insurance are further conditions. Translation, certification and the receiving consulate's practical checklist also matter. Once the actual qualification direction and work are established, prepare those remaining components and the visa and post-entry residence steps; a professional title alone is not the completed application.
