Hungary Guest Investor Residence: Which Family Members Can Apply?

A Hungary guest investor residence permit may support family reunification, but being a relative does not by itself establish eligibility. The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP) lists spouses, minor children and certain relatives who meet specific dependency or health conditions. Before preparing an application, check the sponsor’s permit category, each family member’s legal relationship and age, then gather evidence for that category.

Spouses and eligible minor children

The authority’s definition includes the spouse of a third-country national or Hungarian national, including a registered partner under the relevant Hungarian law. It also includes minor children of the sponsor and spouse, including adopted and foster children. A dependent minor child may qualify where the sponsor or spouse has parental custody. A step, adoption or foster relationship should be supported by the relevant civil-status and custody records rather than described only by family label.

The family-reunification factsheet separately lists dependent parents of the sponsor or spouse. It also includes a sibling or ascendant family member of the sponsor or spouse who cannot support themselves because of health reasons. These are specific categories with additional conditions; they do not make every adult child, sibling, cohabiting partner or other relative automatically eligible.

Check the sponsor’s residence category

Eligibility also depends on the sponsor’s Hungarian residence status. The authority lists several sponsor permit categories for which family reunification may not be granted, including the White Card and certain employment, seasonal work, guest-worker, study and training permits. A guest investor residence permit is not named among those exclusions in the current factsheet, but the sponsor’s actual status and the rules in force when the application is made still need to be checked. Do not transfer rules from a different residence route.

Match each relationship to the right record

A spouse will generally need a marriage or relevant registered-partnership record. For a child, prepare a birth certificate and, where relevant, adoption or foster-care documentation. If the application relies on custody, a step-parent relationship or a dependent child, organise the parent-child records and the court or competent-authority documents showing custody. The authority may also require consent documents for a minor applicant. Names, dates of birth, marital details and information across certificates should match.

A parent or other dependent relative must show both the relationship and the applicable dependency condition. Where the claim relies on inability to support oneself because of health, prepare medical and living evidence that addresses that condition. A relationship certificate alone does not prove dependency or a health-related inability to self-support. Confirm the current translation, authentication and document-format rules with the competent Hungarian mission and the immigration authority.

Each applicant still has individual residence requirements

Qualifying as a family member addresses only one part of the application. Each person may also need their own passport and application records, evidence of accommodation and funds in Hungary, healthcare cover and arrangements for departure. A minor’s file must be handled by the appropriate legal representative. The investor’s investment documents do not replace each relative’s identity, relationship or residence evidence.

A practical checklist for each person should record nationality and age, legal relationship to the sponsor, custody or dependency evidence, issuing authority, translation or authentication requirements, and anything still to confirm. If a category or document is uncertain, check it with the competent Hungarian authority before filing. Checked against official guidance on 22 October 2026.
