Working on Germany’s Opportunity Card: Part-Time Hours, Job Trials and the Next Permit
Germany's search Opportunity Card allows limited work during a job search, but it is not unrestricted permission for regular full-time employment. Check the combined part-time hours, the purpose and length of any job trial, and the residence permission required once an employer offers a longer-term position.
Keep the search permission and the job distinct
The initial search card is issued for up to one year. Use that period to pursue a realistic professional direction, rather than assuming the card provides a job or guarantees conversion to a work residence title. The actual document and conditions should guide the activities you accept.
Before departure, connect your qualifications and experience to suitable vacancies. Prepare a clear CV, employment dates and evidence of technical or professional work. Describe achievements that you can support without disclosing a former employer's confidential information. A persuasive application should remain consistent with the records used for immigration purposes.
Add up work across employers
The official guidance permits one or more part-time jobs totalling 20 hours per week. The limit is not a fresh allowance for each employer. If two businesses offer shifts, examine the total arrangement and your residence conditions before agreeing to both schedules.
Ask for written details of duties, location, pay, hours and duration. Keep actual schedules and working-time records so that later questions can be answered from evidence. A recruitment advertisement describing work as flexible does not establish that every possible pattern falls within your permission.
This part-time work can help support living costs, but it should not make the professional job search disappear. Reserve time for interviews, language learning and qualification issues. A budget that only works if an unconfirmed job immediately provides maximum hours is vulnerable before the first application is even submitted.
Check what makes a job trial eligible
The official guidance describes trials of up to two weeks per employer, directed towards qualified employment, vocational training or a qualification programme. Calling an arrangement a trial does not by itself establish its purpose or legality. Record the dates and intended role, and clarify the activity before it begins.
A trial should not be treated as an indefinite sequence of ordinary shifts. If the business wants ongoing work after the permitted trial, reassess the appropriate arrangement. Questions about pay and workplace protections should also be addressed under the applicable employment rules rather than assuming an immigration label resolves them.
A successful interview does not change the residence title
After a concrete offer, identify the appropriate employment route. Possibilities described by the official guidance include the EU Blue Card and other qualified-employment residence permits, with different qualification, salary and job requirements. Do not select a route solely because the employer recognises its name.
Prepare the contract or offer information, job description, salary, hours and qualification evidence. The official questions and answers also describe the employer's Declaration of Employment. A contract may be useful evidence, but receiving it is different from being authorised to start the proposed regular employment.
In particular cases, an extended Opportunity Card may be relevant where qualified employment is available and another employment title is not available. This is subject to conditions, not an automatic two-year extension for every job seeker. Check the actual next step with the responsible foreigners authority.
Agree a start date that the documents support
Tell the prospective employer what permission you currently hold and what remains necessary. Keep application confirmations, authority requests and decisions with the employment file. Coordinate the start date using the actual residence position, rather than a promised processing time. If the offer changes before the decision, update the assessment so that the job ultimately performed matches the basis presented.
