Germany Opportunity Card Funds in 2026: Blocked Account, Part-Time Income and Budget
Germany's 2026 Opportunity Card subsistence assessment uses a minimum net amount of EUR1,091 per month. The official guidance describes a blocked account, a formal Declaration of Commitment and acceptable existing part-time employment as possible evidence. This financial test is different from the total cost of moving to Germany and searching for work.
Match the evidence to the requested stay
Start with the intended search period and the source of funding you can actually document. The initial search Opportunity Card can run for up to one year; the official questions and answers explain that insufficient proof for the full period can affect the duration granted. Do not assume that asking for a year guarantees a year of permission.
If using a blocked account, check the current mission's requirements before choosing a provider or transferring money. This account is designed to release funds under restrictions. It should not be confused with an ordinary savings balance that remains freely available for immediate withdrawal.
Read the opening, transfer, release, fee and cancellation terms. Keep the account holder's name consistent with the passport and application evidence. Where money comes from an overseas account, plan for actual bank procedures and exchange costs rather than assuming funds will arrive instantly or without deductions.
A private promise is not a formal commitment
The Declaration of Commitment involves a formal process and a person in Germany who can demonstrate the necessary financial means. A relative's message saying that they will help is not automatically the required document. The official guidance directs the person making the commitment to the competent authority in Germany.
The person giving support should understand the responsibility before proceeding. Check the authority's documents and process, as well as what the applicant must submit. Do not describe a declaration as merely a convenient letter that avoids all financial assessment.
Use actual contracted income, not expected earnings
The official questions and answers explain that an existing part-time employment contract can be considered in the financing assessment. If accepted net monthly salary meets the stated amount, it can meet the financial requirement; where it is lower, a blocked account can cover the difference under the described arrangement.
That does not mean a job advertisement, an interview invitation or hoped-for future shifts can replace financial proof. Present the actual contract, pay and hours for assessment. The employment itself must also fit the Opportunity Card's work conditions. A higher income estimate is not a reason to disregard those limits.
Build the relocation budget in separate columns
List pre-departure spending such as qualification evidence, any necessary recognition process, examinations, translations, application charges, insurance and travel. Record professional service fees separately from government charges. Avoid a single headline package that conceals which amounts are compulsory, optional or payable to third parties.
Then estimate costs after arrival: temporary accommodation, rental deposit, housing, food, transport, communications and job-search activity. Use actual quotations or realistic local evidence where available. The subsistence benchmark is not a guarantee that every city, household or preferred living arrangement can be funded at that level.
Retain continuing obligations in the country you are leaving, including family support, loan payments and existing insurance. Keep an emergency amount accessible in a way consistent with the overall funding arrangement, rather than counting the same restricted money twice.
Test a slower job search before committing
Compare the cash position if suitable employment is found early with the position if interviews take longer or no suitable offer arrives. Decide which expenses can be postponed and when the plan needs review. Financial evidence supports the residence application; it cannot guarantee a job, a particular income or a later employment permit.
