Can Family Join a German Opportunity Card Holder? Spouse and Children Explained
An Opportunity Card does not automatically give a spouse the right to join its holder without a residence title of their own. If both partners independently meet the Opportunity Card requirements, they can apply and enter together. Children may accompany a search-card holder under certain conditions, with their living costs an important part of the assessment.
Check the spouse's own route
Create a separate eligibility file for each adult. A marriage certificate proves a relationship; it does not prove the second person's qualifications, language evidence or entitlement to a search residence title. Do not treat a partner-related point in one person's calculation as a substitute for the other person's own eligibility.
If the spouse does not qualify for an Opportunity Card, investigate whether another suitable residence title is available. A short visit and a plan to live or work in Germany are different purposes. The entry and application process must reflect the actual passport, residence and intention rather than a general assumption based on where the couple currently lives.
The official questions and answers explain that, after the principal person takes up qualified employment and secures the corresponding residence status, spouse reunification can be considered. The relevant employment residence title and family requirements must still be checked at that stage. A job-search plan should not be sold as a completed family-reunification outcome.
Children require their own assessment
Official guidance allows children to come under certain conditions and stresses the ability to cover their living costs. It does not say that every child automatically receives permission because a parent holds the search card. Check each child's age, relationship, passport and proposed residence arrangement against the applicable process.
Where only one parent will travel, identify any custody, consent or related legal documents that need attention. Use the competent authority's checklist for translations and other document formalities. A household record used in the country of origin should not simply be assumed to replace every relationship or custody document required abroad.
Plan the household budget by person
Separate each adult's required financial proof from the resources and evidence needed for children. The single applicant's subsistence figure is not an all-family package. Consider housing size, deposits, insurance, travel and ongoing commitments that continue in the current country of residence.
If both adults intend to search for work, their interviews, cities and first employment dates may differ. Do not base the entire budget on both obtaining suitable jobs immediately. Compare travelling together with one adult going first, while keeping the legal eligibility of each arrangement distinct from the family's personal preference.
Insurance should also be checked for every person, including the period before employment begins. The principal applicant's policy does not necessarily demonstrate cover for everyone else. Obtain appropriate advice where there are ongoing medical needs, and check any transition to employment-related coverage against actual dates and eligibility.
Keep schooling and housing decisions reversible where possible
Build a timeline around evidence and decisions: qualification checks, each person's application, the actual permission obtained, accommodation and the child's practical needs. Do not convert an estimated visa time into a guaranteed school start date. Understand cancellation terms before paying for accommodation or other substantial commitments.
Maintain an alternative plan if recognition evidence, an interview or a family application takes longer. Agree how childcare, job searching and administration will be shared. These are practical household decisions, not additional immigration entitlements, but they help reveal whether the proposed move is workable.
Reassess after qualified employment is secured
Once the worker's residence position changes, prepare an updated family file showing the relevant title, job, income, home, insurance and relationship evidence. The earlier Opportunity Card documents may remain useful, but the next application is not automatically completed by reusing the same folder. Each family member's permission and expiry should remain separately recorded.
