Germany Opportunity Card Eligibility: Recognition Route or Six-Point Route?

Germany's Opportunity Card has two main eligibility directions: an appropriate German or fully recognised qualification can establish the skilled-worker route without points, while the alternative route requires the relevant formal qualification, basic language ability and at least six points. Both still require the other applicable conditions, including the ability to support the stay.

Begin with the actual applicant and purpose

Record nationality, the passport to be used, current lawful residence and any existing German status. Chinese, English or another shared language does not determine the same entry and application process for everyone. Check the responsible German mission or authority for the applicant's actual circumstances.

Also establish whether the person is looking for qualified work or already has a concrete suitable offer. The Opportunity Card is not a mandatory first purchase before every German work move. An existing offer may make an employment residence route worth assessing directly, subject to its own job, salary and qualification requirements.

Confirm what has been recognised

For the first direction, examine the German qualification or the evidence that the overseas qualification has the required recognition in Germany. A degree certificate and a claim that the institution is well known do not by themselves settle that question. Keep the award, institution, subject and formal assessment together.

The official guidance states that this skilled-worker direction does not require language proof for the Opportunity Card. That should not be turned into a promise that German is unnecessary for employment. Employers can have real language requirements, and regulated professions may involve separate professional conditions.

People who completed studies or vocational training in Germany should also examine the specific post-completion job-search arrangements described by the official guidance. Do not assume that the Opportunity Card is always the most appropriate process merely because its name is familiar.

Check the alternative route in the correct order

The points direction starts with the relevant academic or vocational qualification recognised in the country where it was acquired. Non-academic vocational training must meet the applicable training-duration requirement. The official guidance distinguishes evidence for university degrees from evidence for vocational qualifications.

Basic language is at least A1 German or B2 English under the CEFR framework. The six points are an additional test, not a way to replace that basic requirement. Prepare accepted proof rather than assigning an unofficial conversion from an unrelated course or language assessment.

Then examine the score supported by the actual documents. Relevant experience, language above the basic level, recognition findings and other categories have individual conditions. A self-check total that includes an unissued certificate or an unverified residence period should remain provisional until the evidence is resolved.

Assess funding and the intended search

The stay must be financially supported. Check the current year's subsistence amount and the evidence available, such as a suitable blocked account, a formal commitment or qualifying existing part-time income. The required proof is different from the practical cost of housing, insurance, relocation and continuing family obligations.

Review target vacancies before leaving. Identify what employers require, which documents are ready and whether recognition or licensing work remains. Holding the search card does not itself grant a professional licence or guarantee that a German employer will accept a qualification for a regulated role.

Understand what the initial card permits

The initial search period is up to one year. Work during that period has limits, including the combined part-time allowance and eligible job trials. A later regular job normally requires the appropriate next residence permission; the offer alone does not change the card's conditions.

A useful initial review ends with concrete evidence gaps and a realistic order of work: resolve the qualification basis, obtain appropriate language evidence if required, document points, confirm funding and plan the application process. It should explain what is established and what still depends on a competent authority's decision, without promising employment or permanent residence.
