How to Apply for Germany’s Opportunity Card: Online Filing, Appointment and Originals

Before filing for Germany’s Opportunity Card, check which German mission is responsible for your place of residence and whether its online route is available for this visa. Completing an online form or passing a preliminary document check is not a visa decision. Applicants are generally still asked to attend in person for biometrics, payment and, where requested, verification of original documents.

1. Confirm the responsible mission and application route

The mission responsible for your application is determined by your place of residence and its consular jurisdiction. Germany’s Consular Services Portal supports many long-stay visa applications, but availability for an Opportunity Card must be checked for the mission responsible for you. Select your actual place of residence in the portal. If the category is not available there, follow that mission’s published paper procedure or contact it; do not submit through a mission that does not handle your residence area.

Some applicants can create a portal account, complete the form and upload documents online. Where online filing is not available for the responsible mission, local instructions may require a paper application or a specified form. Appointment systems, translation rules and document-submission arrangements can vary by location, so use the current checklist issued by the mission with jurisdiction over your residence.

2. Match each document to your eligibility route

Organise evidence around the route you are using. If you qualify as a skilled worker with a qualification recognised in Germany, prepare the relevant qualification and recognition evidence. If applying through the points system, you must also document the basic qualification and language requirements, as well as each criterion for which you claim points. A CV or self-calculated score alone does not establish eligibility.

The official guidance lists common documents such as a valid passport, academic or vocational qualification documents, recognition evidence for the chosen route, language evidence, proof of funds and, in general, incoming health insurance. Employment evidence should make the dates, duties and relevant skills clear. Check the accepted test, result and validity requirements for language evidence. Whether a document needs translation, certification or an additional record depends on the responsible mission’s checklist.

Create a document index with the document name, issuing body, date, language, translation status, eligibility point it supports and whether the original must be brought to the appointment. If names or dates differ between your diploma, CV and employment letters, resolve the discrepancy and prepare a clear explanation before filing.

3. Upload, respond to requests and book the appointment

If the online category is available, complete the fields and upload legible, complete documents in the requested format. The portal may conduct a preliminary completeness check and ask you to correct missing information. Keep a copy of each submission and response. A preliminary check helps identify gaps; it does not mean the authority has completed the legal assessment or approved the visa.

After the relevant online steps, follow the portal or mission’s instructions to book an appointment. The Federal Foreign Office explains that applicants still attend in person to provide fingerprints and a photograph, pay the visa fee and, if requested, present specified original documents. Some applications may be handled through an external service provider designated by the mission. Before attending, compare the appointment notice, passport, originals and requested copies against the checklist.

Final checks before submission

Recheck passport validity, spelling of names, form answers, the period covered by financial evidence, insurance dates and the qualification or language evidence required for your route. If family members are applying with you, check whether the portal supports a group application for this visa category and prepare separate evidence for each person. A family member cannot simply rely on the main applicant’s qualification.

Save the mission’s confirmation, any request for further documents, payment information and appointment record. Processing times vary with the case, location and completeness of the file. An online pre-check or a booked appointment does not guarantee approval or a decision date. Leave flexibility in travel, housing and employment plans until the visa decision is known.
